991 Major service $3600 WT....
Local Porsche dealer just quoted me $3600 for the major service on a 991, the one that's done every 40k miles....its that insane or the going rate?

Tons of threads on this. Yes, the price is insane, and yes, you need to find a good indy near you

Zero reason whatsoever to go to a dealer for standard service outside of your warranty.
Y'all gotta stop doing that.

my local dealer is the worst - and it might just be me but I always feel like they don't give one crap about me
when we first moved here (a year ago), I went there to buy a car, they wouldn't even send a sales associate out to greet me...
then, after the hurricane (people were jet skiing outside on the street they're located), the next day the water subsided and they had all of their car's doors open - apparently drying them out. hard pass
glad I found a C2S that's been driven (quite a bit) but well taken care ofl out of TX
anyway, the local dealer will not be servicing my car...

4 year / 40k service at dealership for $3.6k seems about right at the dealership in major cities. It doesn't mean that's reasonable. Most of reputable dealership will do at 50-60% of dealership charge.

Maybe one reason? The dealers get service bulletins which do not show on recall site, but result in a part replacement or the like at no charge (like the heat shield one a year or two ago). An Indy would not most likely know about this or do it for free.

Mmm, TSB/recall work I'd consider under that umbrella of "warranty"

i get that, but how would one learn about these “campaigns” as they are not available to look up anywhere. I guess here on Rennlist… Wish we would have an Indy in Des Moines! No one here - not even a dealer until 2024 when we finally get one back after about 15 year break. Porsche of Omaha finally made it happen.

Ah, I see what you're saying.
Rennlist or the greater internet, certainly. ALLDATA, which a lot of indies use, has listed TSBs as well as their own internal community support, and the NHTSA has by-VIN listings of recalls though those usually have mailers and phone calls associated with them. You can also just call Porsche and ask based on your VIN if you're curious.
Something like the "A/C compressor is annoying and noisy" complaint TSB, sure, you probably won't stumble across that. I'd also say most people probably don't think there's anything particularly wrong with their A/C compressor, either! At least, not until they read this... now Porsche dealerships are gonna get phone calls from high maintenance 991 owners demanding the TSB insulation.

If the service is performed correctly it will not void any sort of warranty you have. Not in the United States, at least.

I have a 991.2, so my prices are for that. My dealer quoted me $2700 to do the 4yr/40k service (oil, air filter, etc.), one independent quoted $2100 and another $3100. Not all indies are the same. I’d also make sure to check the quoted work line by line, look at the hours quoted. I’m not at home, so I can’t check the quotes I got before, but I think the spark plugs (3yr/40k) were around 4 hours, and the air filter was considerably more, around 6-8hr. The hour labor rate in one area will be different than others, so don’t just go off what someone half way across a continent tells you they paid. Shop around, how much they charge really depends on the market rates for your area.

My major (Fall 2021) was $1,190 + sales tax (at a great independent).
