Is this bearing-ish sound normal from the 3.8L engine?
Hey all,
I recently picked up this 991.1 C2S and have been loving it. I'm wondering if this sound at idle is normal...
Please listen to the videos below, beyond the engine/exhaust noise, there is a second noise that's not quite in sync with the engine. Almost sounds like a pulley or throwout bearing (of course it's not a throwout bearing, but it's a similar sound). The sound does not change whether I'm in drive, neutral, on the brake or off. It becomes more difficult to hear when revving the engine higher.
It's a 2014 911 C2S PDK with 47k miles
Thank you

have never heard that sound from my 3.8 (2013 C2S). no clue what it could be though
thinking some of the more knowledgeable RL members might be able to point you in the right direction

not normal I would say; could be a rattle due to an accessory?

Agree, not normal at all. I'm usually the one telling people these engines make a lot of odd noises and not to worry, but that one has me concerned particularly since you just got the car. Does it increase/decrease in frequency with engine speed? I'd pick up a mechanics stethoscope at the auto parts store and see if you can pinpoint the location.

Is the sound coming from your engine bay or out of the engine's exhaust pipes?
Maybe the engine cover, fan, or intake hose isn't seated in correctly and vibrating?
It may even be an exhaust leak somewhere if you hear it under the car? You'll have to pinpoint it a bit more. GL

Agree -- I had a similar noise in a MB car, and the source was a loose heat shield that was touching the exhaust. Try pressing the heat shields under the car while the car is running. Hopefully it is just that.
EDIT: on second thought, sounds a bit like an exhaust leak -- maybe a loose bolt or sleeve in the exhaust system?

I don't think this is contributing to what I'm hearing, but I do know from first-hand experience that the exhaust tips need to be mounted almost perfectly not to rattle. I still have to fine-tune the passenger side one a bit more as it rattles quite often.

Sounds like your A/C is short cycling, the low/high/low idle and the bearing sound changes with that idle. Could be compressor. Get an automotive stethoscope and start poking at things.
