Default Choosing between three similar Michelin PS4S 20" rear tires

Hey all,

It's that time, I'm almost done with a rear set of Michelin PS4S tires after ~6,000 miles. I went to tirerack.com to discover there are three PS4S tires that will fit my 2015 Carrera S coupe with 20" rims. After chatting with a tire rack rep, it appears one tire is technically OEM spec for a Mercedes, one is " standard OEM", and one is OEM Porsche. It sounds silly to ask, but I figured one of you pros would have some cool secret knowledge to potentially pick the Mercedes or standard OE over the Porsche OEM? Between the three options there are some small tread width measurement differences, otherwise the tire rack compare tool says they are all identical.

Porsche OEM:

Mercedes OEM:

Standard OEM:

Thank you.

I'd recommend going with the N-spec version—doing a "Compare" on tire rack.com's setup and looking at the tread widths will reveal one reason why—the sizing was tailored to the 991 by Porsche and Michelin.

While there are differences, they are minimal to the point that the overwhelming majority of owners will not notice the difference between any of the three tires, much less find themselves in a situation where the difference will have any meaningful impact. Get whatever is available at a price point that agrees with you the most.

I don't know, that extra $12 for the Porsche N spec might be to much for me to handle. 😁

You nailed it, that totally makes sense. I'll go with the Porsche spec for peace of mind. The video @doctj posted makes me feel confident those Porsche engineers are clearly some of the best in the world.

I'd add that ideally you'd like to ensure you're running like to like front and rear (N-spec front, N-spec rear). Though as previously mentioned you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference in normal driving. If saving hundreds of dollars I'd not worry too much. At $12/tire..........

Also it’s not just N0 also N1 and N2. Depending on the revisions of tire.

When I put the rear PS4S tires on my car later this year it's going to identity as a Ford GT500 since they were out of Porsche spec tires.

Crowds better watch out.

BTW if you are only getting 6,000 miles out of a set of street tires...what are you doing with them?

Although the OP has been given answers to his question, I thought I'd still chime in regarding my own experience on my 2017 C2S with Sport Package and PDK. When I purchased my car in March of 2019, it had Pirelli winter tires on the OEM wheels, and about 14k total miles on the odometer. I decided to leave those tires on the OEM wheels and to purchase a new set of wheels and tires from TireRack and chose Michelin PS4S tires... but back then Tire Rack did not show availability of any N-rated tires of that type. So I chose the "normal" generic ones, and have had zero issues with them, and now have about 36k on the car including several track days. I will likely replace them with a new set all around despite the front positions have a couple more 32nds of tread because these tires are now over 5 years old and traction falls off with age. Renewing all positions will maintain the balance of the car.

Thanks for the input everyone. My guess after measuring the tread on the rear tires is that I have ~2-3k miles left. I am going to do my best to make it to springtime as the rumor is Michelin is coming out with the PS5S before summertime. Does anyone know how long it took for the original N-spec Porsche PS4S tire to become available when the PS4S started shipping?

If you are getting only ~ 6K miles out of a set of rears, a competent alignment will be very worthwhile.

I'll get more like 8-10k by the time they are at the wear indicators. I had it aligned about a year ago so I'm good there. I only take it out a couple times a week for the local twisty roads where I can drive spiritedly and get all of 3rd and almost all of 4th gear. I have the PSI front and rear at the comfort recommended pressure, ~33 PSI I believe. I love this C2S and am happy I didn't get a model with more power. I think 400hp is perfect for my modest driving abilities.
