I've heard of it done on 997s, but not 991s yet.
I'm sure it can be done. There are a lot of options in the coding revolving around things like "is this vehicle equipped with awd" or "is there a sunroof" and whatnot. While I doubt it, there's a chance it might be as simple as flipping one of those bits.

I didn't know people did this - interesting stuff! Assuming it's mostly weight savings and increased fun factor?

... and this is the point that always confused the hell out of me. it would have been cheaper to sell, buy, and prep a C2 over converting a C4.
there's the whole widebody/narrowbody thing I suppose? there's no widebody C2 non-S, right?

the only guy I know that did this was to become competitive in PCA racing.

Yep, which is C2S X51 in WB with some extra GT/Turbo bits and unique features.
The only way to get a 3.4 wide body is C4. So the to get a C2 wide body would require what is being asked here.
I don't really see it making sense on an operational GTS used on the street, when you can just buy one in RWD and save the hassle/depreciation involved.
I suppose for a rebuild/track car it might make sense.
Either way, it would be interesting knowledge to have and understand.

My son did it to his 993TT. He claimed was for track duty and was pleased with the outcome. I drove the car in anger when it was four wheel drive and was very impressed. Never drove it in anger after the mods. Quite frankly it never made sense to me, but I was never a ttack rat.

I have a RWD GTS. 991.2. They come with that silly E-Diff. Whilst it is an LSD, its computer controlled with oil.
I was at the track and things were heating up, and suddenly I got a “Front Diff Failure” error message on the dash.
I laughed. Pitted and switched car off and back on again, and it was gone and it has never happened again since.
Being RWD I clearly have no front diff to fail. But the system clearly thinks its an option.
When E-diff gets hot, it stops locking. So I have replaced it with a Full mechanical, OS Giken LSD. Zero issues since. Locks on command.

maybe unrelated but looking for some help here myself...noticed car had grease spilling out of driver front axle on 2017 C4S and had a clunking noise so I took the car to a reputable shop and they tell me I need front differential and both front axles replaced....NOT CHEAP, parts close to $7500. The car just reached 60k miles and sees about 4 track events a year since around 40k miles. Also been to a few drag strip events and launch the car for fun regularly. The car has GTS turbos with a tune so it makes significantly more power than stock along with PDK tune. The only suspension related work I have is Bilstein B16 coilovers and camber plates with -2.9 degrees camber up front.
Given the cost of this job, really hoping I can convert to C2. Any thoughts? Is this to be expected with a car that sees track time? I have never done differential maintenance, only engine and PDK service. Thank you in advance.
