Tough day yesterday for 991.1S
I've owned my 2012 63K mile 991.1S since early December 2023 and the car has run perfectly but yesterday I traveled a couple of blocks from the house and I noticed car was in 4th gear while leaving from a stop. At that point I got several messages that poped up, "Transm fault Poss. No R Gear Drive on Poss", "Fault engine control possible to drive on" & "Start/stop operation deactivated". Initally the car only went into reverse but when I reversed back to the house it only went into 1st. I pulled codes P0700, P1735 & P1731 from the scanner. Most likely cause is the distance sensor from what I've read. I'm super happy with the fact that I purchased the car from Porsche dealer and it has CPO warranty so I'm hoping coverage won't be an issue but I need a drink when I look into my empty garage.
Really appreciate it!
- Has anyone had similar issue and if so what was the CPO process with the dealer. I'm dreading them coming up with a reason not to cover this.
- If anyone has had a PDK replaced by the dealer what were the leadtimes like? Not sure if they keep these in stock in the U.S. or if it has to come from Germany.
- I've read that the issue with the sensor is related to heat and that was addressed with newer builds of the PDK. Any have any knowledge about this?
Really appreciate it!

Just heard back from the Collection in Miami and they confirmed that the PDK needs to be replaced. They will have transmission by this Thursday and should have the job competed by end of next week. I don't typically purchase product insurance but I can't tell you how happy that I did have the CPO in this case. I'm not only saving the cost of the PDK replacement but the car is a 2012.5 991 so the PDK service was coming up this year which won't be needed now also saving me some $$.

Keep us informed of what and how this gets remedied.
Please ask all the right question's to see if the replacement transmissions has been upgraded in any way over their lifespan.
Porsche just needs to team up with some of the local repair facilities who have figured out the fix.

If you are covered by active CPO warranty you have noting to worry about. The dealership will diagnose the problem and fix it. No "CPO process" to follow or any reason to loose any sleep. Not sure about lead time, but doubt it would be anything crazy. Keep us updated.

Curious - does the selling CPO dealership have any reason to skimp out on warranty repairs? Does it penalize the dealer if a car they CPO'd generates a lot of warranty repairs?

I purchased car from Porsche in Jacksonville Florida and it's in The Collection in Miami for service so that shouldn't be a problem. During the purchase the saleman told me that the CPO cost the dealer about $4K plus cost for significant inspections and updates in order for the car to qualify, so they only do it with cars that are in excellent shape to keep those cost as low as possbile. I would think it would be an issue for the dealer is they missed something obvious during inspection but in this case theres probably would be no way to know that the PDK was going to crash after 1500 miles after those inspections.

Well I once stopped for gas once and got a all the same fault warnings. Then I was told to check my gas cap. Which I did and it was mis-threaded. I removed the gas cap and then re-screwed it on then after five restart, the faults cleared the system and the car was back to normal. Never would have imagined what a faulty gas cap seal can cause the car. Might be worth a try.

Odd with the 4th gear thing. Usually PDK faults where the sensor inside goes bad don't do that. I agree with above, sometimes its something so insignificant... usually the battery.

I've read about the battery causing all types of problems so I'm not ruling it out but the messges lined up perfectly with what I've read about the distance sensor issue. After it initally was in 4th coming out of stop, it would only go into second then after a restart it would only go into reverse then only 1st so to me it sounds like the controller didn't have a good signal about what gear it was currently in.

CPO should take care of it no problem, so you shouldn't worry much. I had a replacement MT years ago that took about a month to get from Germany. This was pre-covid so I don't know what it is like now.

Another 991 owner on one of my chat groups was quoted $33k by Porsche of West Palm for the PDK replacment so I dodged a huge bullet.
