Default 991.1 engine ticking noise

Hello there

My 2013 991.1 C2S(50000km mileage) engine is ticking and it is very scary sound to hear.

Please help me

It ticks only the engine is fully warmed up.

If the engine is cold, it never ticks, no ticking sound at all.

It ticks only when rpm is dropping(1400rpm to 1100rpm) in case of lifting off gas pedal or revving at stationary.

Even if the engine is hot, I must drive aggressively at higher rpm(more than 4000rpm) to make the condition for ticking sound.

If I drive slowly and gently, it doesnt ticks even if the engine hot.

No fault code or engine check light.

Everything is normal except the ticking sound.

What is wrong about my engine, please share your informations or thoughts.

They all tick in some way form or fashion especially inside a garage where it's more pronounced.

It's mostly the fuel injectors doing the ticking.

Some Audi's and VW's are way worse at the same ticking especially on their 4 cylinder models.

Thanks for the reply.

As you said, I can hear ticking more clearly when the sound is reflected when driving nearby the walls or inside tunnels.

I'll check the injectors, thank you.

Cold Porsche engines are noisy. 0-40 weight oil contributed.

I use 5-40 oil and it is quieter on start up

may I suggest that you might not rev cold engine?

Thank you for the reply.

I never rev when the engine is cold.

Try not to exceed 3000rpm until fully warmed up.

If it's only happening when the engine's fully warmed up and at certain RPMs, it could be related to stuff like valve train parts or maybe a hiccup with the lifters. Considering your car's mileage (50000km), it might be a good idea to look into the timing chain and tensioners too.

I thought the lifter noise could be heard only when the engine is cold.

If my lifters are bad, could it be heard when hot?

Highly doubtful it is bore scoring but if you want to put yourself at ease, drop the pan and bore scope the cylinder walls. Agree with the comments here though it’s nothing to worry about. Funny though, yours ticks when warm, mine only ticks when cold. Who knows? The best comment is that these engines tick.

+1 on this. 0w40 caused slight ticking at cold start. I use 5w50 now and it's much better, but I also live in a warm climate so I run that all year round.
