The next 911, internally code-named the 991, is due out in late 2011 and will share several components with the 981 Boxster and Cayman. According to CAR's Porsche source, Mr. Durheimer, "The design can of course be evolutionary, but beneath the skin, almost anything is possible."

To the first point, Durheimer says that "there is no need for old-fashioned protruding door mirrors" and that the newly adopted pedestrian crash standards will cause Porsche to make obvious alterations to the front of the car. The rear will be reshaped to further enhance aerodynamics, along with a new active rear spoiler, adjustable front splitter, integrated "jet vents" in the wheel arches to keep the 911 planted at speed and a new floor pan design.

On the engineering front, the new dual-clutch PDK transmission will be around until 2018, when Porsche may implement a seven-speed CVT (!) into it's range-topping coupe. New materials are also part of the package, and with the knowledge gleaned from the Carrera GT, Porsche hopes to reduce the 911's curb weight by 10 percent through the use of composite materials replacing aluminum.

Within the next decade, Porsche plans to use more active steering and torque vectoring on its new models, along with next-generation PSM stability management, a water-level sensor to combat hydroplaning and, of all things, a parking system with a rear-mounted camera similar to that found on the Lexus LS range and some new Volkswagen products.

I almost started crying with tears of joy when I read about the 10% weight reduction.

No mention of changing the classic rear drive layout, which is positive. Also, found the following interesting: "Together with other changes, the much more sophisticated material mix should help to reduce the kerbweight by ten percent and with it the fuel consumption – no mean feat in view of the more powerful engines and the more complex chassis set-up."
Basically, all-round positive, although I am fascinated as to the solution for eliminating side mirrors...

10% wieght reduction would mean a 2800lb car. That is awesome.

Also can't wait to see what they have in store for the new Cayman in early 09.

I don't know if I should laugh or cry seeing the rear parking camera on a 911. Honestly who will need that on a 911?

If it is anything remotely like my Audi CVT, it means a terrible, awful, abysmal idea. The Audi trans is unreliable, overly complicated, and cost prohibitive to replace. They break right after warranty and then Audi doesn't stand behind them. Seriously, I hope that Porsche really thinks through any CVT idea, because my experience with Audi and its Multitronic trans. is the worst of any car in my life.

(In answer to your question, the CVT can simulate gear ratios in "manual" or "sport" mode, which is probably what that means. My Audi has 6 simulated gears. Newer cars have 7. They are fake ratios that allow you to shift the car like a normal tiptronic. The shifts are near instantaneous --- when the transmission is functioning properly, that is.)

Seriously! The car is tiny and has great rear visability.

Couple things on CVT (1) it does improve fule economy; (2) by running at optimal revs and expanding the diameter of the gear to give acceleration; (3) otherwise a synthetic auto; (4) as long as one can still get the manual, I am OK.

Back-up camera: Sounds like a great idea. All cars will have this soon. Widespread on Prius and makes parking much easier.

CVT: Also on the Prius! Through I wouldn't start to compare to a 911. The Tesla battery powered high-perf. roadster likely has the same feel, where it's continuous no-shift super golf-cart linear power.
Of course CVT would = auto tranny only, right?

The Tesla just has one gear... not a CVT.

My buddy works there and gave me a ride in one.

eye-popping accelleration... really... felt much faster than the 997S on acceleration
