Default Maintenance on 991

I recently heard from a P mechanic that in order to access the oil filter the fan housing AND spoiler must be removed. Some have said the access will be thru the bottom like the boxster/cayman but its not true.
Also the rear bumper needs to come off in order to replace the air filter. What a major PITA! This is very un P like. This will never fly on a GT3.

As a DIY'er Im very disappointed.

Not what I have been told by my tech. He says everything is done from the bottom.

Hard to believe that the bumper would have to come off to get to the air cleaner. Would like to see that confirmed/denied by a new owner in the near future.....

This will upset the owner who takes his 991 to JiffyLube. But... if anyone takes a decent car to JiffyLube...

Oil filter is in the same location as the 997.2, on the top of the engine. The photo below is from the 991 Technik with the fans removed and possibly the spoiler as well. The red arrow points to the oil filter cap. The circled item is part of the thermal management heat exchanger circuit described in the book in Chapter 2. I don't think you can get to the oil filter from underneath without dropping the engine.

As far as the air filter, it wouldn't surprise me if you have to remove the rear bumper. You have to remove the front bumper on the Panamera to get to the air filter, which is one reason the maintenance interval was listed as 80K miles. It might be accessible with the spoiler removed, depends on what the Porsche engineers intended.

That image looks to be the engine bay simply with the fan assembly removed. I highly doubt Porsche would make oil and filter changes a big deal - they wouldn't want to jeopardize my dealers profit margin on their $400 oil service!

And on the topic of Jiffy Lube oil changes, I'll relate my favorite Porsche story from years ago. I'm waiting for my wife's car to get serviced when a guy brings in his new looking 911. The manager insists on taking care of the car personally and carefully pulls it in and parks over the service pit. After they're done, the manager jumps in and starts the car - unfortunately he left the car in gear and it bolts forward immediately when started and through the closed bay door...felt sorry for the owner who looked ready to cry!

Pics of the disassembly required to service oil and air filters have shown up in the 997 forum. It appears kosmo is correct....

Those dynamic engine mounts are definitely underneath the spoiler. They wouldn't be visible in the previous photo without the spoiler removed along with the air filter housing. As far as the air filter, if the housing is hinged like it appears in the photos below, you won't be accessing it just from the fan shroud opening. Still looks to me like remove the bumper, and/or the spoiler assembly

I'm sure the dealer will keep their profit margin by charging more for the additional labor. Hasn't stopped them before.

What are the top 2 fans for? Cooling the engine by sucking the heat up? How does the air get to the engine? Is it through the center air duct? That center air duct seems inefficient , as you don't get much ram air since its position is vertical and horizontal. Can someone elaborate on this?

Thanks

Road & Track describes them as "heat extraction fans", so if the magazine's language is correct, the fans suck hot air out of the engine compartment. That center air duct is the intake for the engine itself. It appears larger, from the looks of it, than the two smaller intakes combined on the 997.2 which also face upwards, BTW. The intake needs to be in an area where pressure is positive; I'd be willing to bet Porsche probably figured out the optimum location for it and the ducting that feeds it.

They should have designed an access door on the bumper........or maybe they want to make the oil change on the 993 seem relatively simple.......as you only need to play with the fender liner to access the second filter on the 993........can't wait to see what they come up with on the 992.......
