So, they reset the seat memory but they also tucked the new Lightning cord connector to the ProClip iphone 5 mount away under the panel there and right to the USB in the glove box...woohoo! The USB connector in the 991 actually has enough juice to charge the phone too. Simply awesome, Porsche.

I won't cast judgement. It is just what it is. Sure the modern 991 has elements of the ol'e 911 design, but it is much larger. That doesn't make it less a sports car- People's expectations for a car are different in 2012 than in the 1960s, plus technology has advanced more than a tad over that half century as well, so automotive engineers can do things now that were impossible before.

As for the OP- Life is short- if you can afford to drive what you want, then don't drive what you don't want. If you like the 356 but don't want an old car, maybe consider a Beck Speedster http://www.beckspeedster.com/ or something similar.
Actually, the 991 is just 2 in longer and the same width as the 997. It feels far bigger because the windshield base is 3 in farther from your seat, the interior design is roomier around the legs, the longer wheelbase with the half shaft locations improve weight distribution and makes movements less "sudden", and the 2 in wider front track improves turn in. Both the 997 and 911 are much larger than air cooled 911s for sure- but they also out handle the early cars easily. I had a very well sorted track oriented 78 and there really is just no comparison in actual performance to the modern cars - but it was one fun car to coax and manhandle.

Chuck, "the 991 is just 2 in longer and the same width as the 997" Is that right? Because I recall looking these dims up on Porsches website back when the 991 first came out and they still had the 997 listed, that the overall length increased only about 1/4", while overall width remained unchanged. Wheelbase increased 3.9" but overall only a fraction. Today's website shows 991 176.81" vs 997 Turbo 176.26". I realize 991 to Turbo is not apples to apples but that's about what I remember seeing back then too. Interestingly, the 997 Turbo is actually wider than the 991, 72.91" Turbo vs 71.18" 991. So the 991 is actually only 0.55" longer and 0.73" narrower than the 997 Turbo.

Yes, yes, the Turbo's width is all at the rear end. That's part of the equation too.

That the 991 APPEARS so much larger than it measures is due to a combination of longer wheelbase (those wheels being so much closer to the ends really draws the eye into seeing greater length), lower roofline with steeper rake fore and aft, and a front end that is now much closer to the same width as the rear. I just find it truly amazing how it all adds up to a perceived improvement that is so much greater than the roughly 1" in any dimension difference would lead one to expect.

Amazing. And yet, so typically Porsche.

Thank you - Benchmark Motoring in Seattle did the fabrication and install of that mount! I'm sure they would be happy to do it for anyone who wants one.

well, I did try the "raise the seat" experiment - that does change the feel in an interesitng way - will try it for a while - tomorrow the car goes back to the shop to replace the mystery pump that caused the check engine light, and I'll have them replace the cheezy plastic cover over the door strap that keeps falling off and see if there is a leak or a ventilation setting issue that's causing the condensation inside.

by the way, I DO have a 356, though I haven't driven it in a long while - there is certainly quite a difference - the 356 had NO accessories, no (useful) heat, no AC, seat adjustment was fore/aft and back tilt, but it got 45mpg average, and flat out, down hill with a tailwind it might make 85 mph (redline was 4500 or 90 mph in 4th). I did have some fun riding it down a freeweay with a great shower or sparks when a rear wheel left the car, taking the brake drum with it. A few miles riding on a shock tower does wear it down a bit. Not my favorite car on a rainy day (no defrost) or a hot day, but certainly economical and comfortable on a mild day.

Dang, Seattle to Miami is one hell of a drive. My car is so big. Not sure it would fit on all of the roads. I do like the mount. Been trying to figure out where to put the phone for two months now. Wanted to do better than my old 997 setup (Kuda mount). Every time my Cyclops coworker plopped down in the passenger chair one of his Neanderthal legs would hit the previous mount and make me wonder if he was going to knock the whole mount into my family jewels. Then he would complain about how close I had the seat forward, saying "when are you going to stop dating Asian women." Whatev'. And that my motoring friends is why I never have nice things. Boohoo I know.

I don't know if you guys ever drove behind a Ferrari 458 Italia on a city lane...that thing barely clears a whole lane as wide as it is! Obviously, the 991 is much wider than that!!!

I was comparing comparable cars. :-)

Am sure the new Trubo will be wider than than the old non-turbo, too. My point is that the 991 ain't that much bigger than what it replaced, which was not that much bigger than what it replaced... and all the way back to the smallest doll. I got my first 911 in 1976. For me the point at which evolution has affected anything but improved performance and comfort has not been reached. But I have a wide driveway and have always gone for shorter springs (and couple times stiffer torsion bars!) amd sway bars so am used to lower ride hights.

Concur. Even the old Testarossa had a fat a$$. It's the bean fuel mix for sure. Welcome to Miami.

The 911 has followed a consistent pattern from the beginning. With the first 911 the front and rear were almost exactly (maybe even exactly) the same width. Then they took the rear end wider. Wider. Then widen the front end again.... rear again.... shampoo, rinse, repeat, introduce 996, at first front and rear nearly the same, widen rear, wider front and rear.... 997, by the time they got done with it as noted above the Turbo rear end was wider than the successor 991, which again was introduced with a front having increased to about the same as the rear.... then they take the 4S wider at the rear....

I sure hope they stop before reaching the Ferrari dimensions but as you say they haven't reached the limit just yet....

Of performance, I should say. Driveways, different matter

Well it is shocking, but perhaps I should also ditch the 991S for a Morgan +4. Who could pass up the 1950s at top white knuckle speed of 100.3 mph and launches (or lurches) from 0-60 mph in 9.7 seconds. Think green too sort of with a fuel consumption of 27.1 miles per imperial gallon. Imperial. Hmmm. Or I can get a Trumpchi from China and still have the same performance envelop. Reminds me of China's national motto: "gai ge kai fang" ("reform and open up"). Well, I will keep the 991 for now, albeit a Morgan or a Trumpchi would open up about 10 to 20 inches on my driveway.
