Default Care for a 991 Cab top

It's still winter here where I am, but I gotta be prepared for the bird droppings which happen almost everyday on my all my cars in the summer.

How do you clean a convertible top? Do you park your cab with its top down?

The best thing to do would be to invest in a car cover, in my opinion. It may sound tedious and time consuming, but it will be worth it.

Disagree on car cover - too much risk of paint scratching IMO. I'd just wash the car normally (my choice being ONR) then 303 that top.

Yes, there is a risk. Unless you do it right! If one's got the time and patience to use the cover regularly and *correctly* , it's still the best option IMO.

The effects of bird-poo on paint are far worse than the risk of scratching the paint while removing the car cover, IMO. Maybe I'm wrong.

How about getting bird poo off your fabric top? Let's say you were at the mall parking lot (no car cover) and got that asteroid size dropping on your nice fabric convertible top, and the sun had some time to dry it out while your wife was trying her 50th outfit... Is there a solution to safely dissolve that crap and then scratch it off?

I wouldn't scratch at it with anything. Assuming the top is fundamentally the same as that on my 996, I offer te following as someone with a 9 year old top that is still in great shape.

If the top isn't showing any signs of dirt (it's a light gray top BTW), I just rince it when I wash the car. This basically gets rid on the loose dust. Occasionally I will brush it with a soft bristled brish to loossen any excess dust.

About twice a year, I give it a good cleaning with Maguire's convertible top cleaner, re-waterproof it using the Porsche convertible top treatment in a spray can. It smells like overpriced scotch guard, but I buy the Porsche stuff just to be safe.

At anyrate the top is 9 years on and still looks and performs great.

Ragg Topp and 303 - both excellent and can't go wrong with either for cleaning and protecting.

Always keep a bottle of water and towel to wipe off bird poo, sap, etc. Saved me from lots of damage!

I know some owners like the Porsche Car Care Kit that includes includes Wash-Shampoo & Convertible top Cleaner, and a 400ml spray bottle of Convertible Top Conditioner. In addition to glass cleaners, leather cleaner, leather conditioner, and hard wax. All items are in closed in a aluminum case for easy transport with five cleaning rags and applicators. Never wash top with any kind of soap. Simply rinse and retreat with waterproofing once a year. I use Ragg Topp sprey!
