Are the sunroof noise issues just for the glass roofs, or do the painted sunroofs have them too?

Depends on what kind of noise you're talking about? My metal sunroof rattles when fully open on rough roads. Dealer attempted a fix/adjustment on my first service visit that helped very little, I've just kind of learned to live with it.
When closed, it's quiet as a vault.

I had some rattles coming from the glass s/r area but it turned out to be the roof-liner fasteners. Dealer fixed those. IMO, the glass s/r has no more rattle probs than the metal one.

There is a thread about sunroof noises that involved a bunch of different things from cable routing to misaligned tracks to sealers, etc. It seemed to me all the posters had glass sunroofs, so I was asking to see if metal sunroofs also had the same issues. I figured the sunroof mechanism is the same, only the panel (glass vs metal) is different.

I'm about to place an order, and am deciding whether or not to include the metal sunroof. Currently, I'm thinking against it, because rattles are annoying to me - I have a difficult time tuning them out. It's very rare for me to have the sound system on, and the sunroof would only be used to exhaust the hot cabin air when I initially drive off.

Not quite. The glass s/r also has a motorized shade beneath it.

Thanks - hadn't thought of that. It might add to the rattles...probably takes away some headroom too?

Not sure, but I'm 6'1" and have ample headroom.

The glass would also be quite a bit heavier than the steel as well. Perhaps that changes the equation.

It seems that some have had good luck in the dealer fixing the rattle. Maybe they will share their stories!
