Do you know if it's easy to change out?

I do not know. Nothing for me is easy.

I was thinking of taking out the trim and having it painted to match the exterior. From what little research I did, it seems that the trim can be challenging to remove.

Meh....I think the standard plastic trim looks fine. Anyone who's been in my car thinks it's metal, and it provides necessary contrast in my black interior.
On the other hand, its use is a perfect example of the "Porsche tax." There are much cheaper cars with either standard or optional aluminum trim for a fraction of the price of what Porsche charges for it. Much like them charging extra for such common things as HID's and Bluetooth in the not so distant past.
PS: I think the Gen I Audi TT started the modern era of aluminum bits in the interior. Its look was revolutionary when it hit the streets in 1999.
