Default Tuning the Bose

I can not get the Bose to sound decent . It seems as if there is a hole in the midrange. +1or 2 on the bass -2on the treble. I am having problems finding the sweet spot.

"No highs, no lows, it must be Bose." That was our old saying back when I was selling/designing home theaters. I spent a little time comparing the Bose to the Base system. I can't seem to remember the settings I ended up with, but I much preferred the Base system as I couldn't get the Bose to sound acceptable to me. I'm sure some that have it could chime in.

Has anyone installed JL speakers in the door as a simple fix?

You can't swap out Bose speakers with aftermarket without completely changing the amplifier and all of the drivers in the car.

Why not? Do the bose speakers have a different impedance than other car speakers?

You got it. Bose speakers are usually 1-2 ohms versus a traditional driver at 4-8 ohms. Bose does this in order to extract as much power as possible from an amplifier that is as cheap as possible. The lack of current makes the "manufactured" sound devoid of anything pleasing to my ears. Bose does understand what people like, so they design their systems for people rather than quality.

I agree that the Bose system lacks midrange. Rhythm guitars and voices are somewhat muted.

My settings to make it sound less terrible are: Linear off. Audio Pilot off (I couldn't believe how much this helped). Surround on. Base 0. Treble +1. Fader to rear two notches. Balance to L one notch (These might vary depending on your seating position).

The easiest way is to set it up for surround sound. An easy setting to push and leave on that makes some difference.

Funny, OT comment: I was reading an interview of Michael Keaton, and that line was an ad-lib suggested by Martin Mull.

Feel free to use that trivia the next time you are on Jeopardy.

First off, I make no claim to being an audiophile, secondly, years of motorcycles and live music have left me with less than perfect hearing.....but....here are my settings for Bose which I find pretty good actually:
Bass +5
Treble +3
Fade and balance set to 0, "speed control" to minimum or off
Surround sound on for music, if it's mostly talk, I think it sounds better with it off.

I haven't been able to find the speed control. I guess I've gotten spoiled, but it drives me crazy having to adjust the volume all the time.
