Default Confused! 997 TT or 991 S

I was very interested in purchasing 991 and the used prices for very low mileage is in the high 80s. I then was looking at turbos 997 and those prices are in the 60s and 70s. Now those used to sell for 150 so that is obviously a much better deal but those have no warranty. Typically I would keep something like this for less than two years to keep the depreciation lower. My buddy owns an exotic car dealership and told me the cost of owning a 991 is less than 8000 for a year. Any comments is appreciated.
Stop by the Porsche dealership the other day and the sales rep was telling me that the Cayman S is the best bang for the buck because it out handles 911 and any of you the other vehicles mentioned below. In addition he said that even though it only has 325 hp it only weighs just over 2000 pounds which makes it a much better power to weight ratio the other vehicles. Honestly I'm not even sure if that is correct. I love the new look of the Cayman and the Boxster for 2013 and newer.

Off this topic within this price range there are so many options. You have the stingray, Audi RS5, M4, etc. so many choices.

I will tell you, when i looked for the car i have now (997.1 TT) I test drove everything under the sun that was for sale (probably 9 turbos) anything from a 9k example to a 55k mile example, they all felt the same lol. I ended up buying a car with 37k miles and am selling it now with 51k miles. They are meant to be driven and if maintained well last you forever. Enjoy the chase because that is the best part!

You need to post this on the Cayman, Boxter, 997TT, Vette, Audi and BMW forums to get well rounded advice,

All three cars (New Cayman S, 991S, and 997TT) are very different from one another, all are great, only you know what is best for you. New Cayman S will handle better than 991, which handles better than 997 so if you are buying for AX or track, keep that in mind. All three cars probably have more performance potential than almost all of us have as drivers so just choose your toy and enjoy the ride.

The Cayman S is slightly lighter than the 911, only in the salesman's dreams is anywhere remotely near 2000 lbs, just sayin'.

Default cayman S weight

Yes the Cayman is only 976 lbs more than 2000. Ge that's not much, just slightly lighter than a half ton. Makes you wonder about the salesman.

Yes. The weight thing is just plain stupid. Personally, I like the latest technology not the fastest speed. All of those cars are pleanty fast. I would take the 991. I traded a 997.2 for my 991 and it is all round just a better car(except for the steering where the 997 has a bit of an edge). The 997TT is faster (not that much faster than a 991 with X51) but I would bet no faster on a tight track. Keep in mind a 991S was just as fast as a 997 GT3 at the Nurburgring. All good cars so it's quite personal.

Is it worth getting sport chrono if I do not plan on using launch control?

No.
SC is a waste for street driving (too agressive on revs) as is the Sport Suspension (too stiff).

Cayman GTS would be nice.
The rear trunk makes it very convinient.

I would take 991S over 997TT.
Only a well optioned 997.2TT manual would put me on the fence.

Both great choices. The turbo will likely depreciate less going forward than the 991S as the initial owner(s) have swallowed the biggest depreciation hit - the depreciation curve will likely be shallower on the 997.

Having owned a 997.2 and now a 991S, I feel the 991 handles much better than the 997. It does feel better balanced and more upmarket in many ways.

The 997 turbo is the much faster car in a straight line but in my 991S I cannot really find a place (other than a track) where I can take advantage of all it's power, let alone a Turbo.

That being said, what you currently own and what you've driven in the past can factor into this as well. What is your current ride? If you've never owned a 911, experiencing a 997 first may be the way to go. But, if you go for the Turbo, you will be spoilt for straight line power and everything else afterwards will feel slower!

Amazing how many almost clueless Porsche sales people are working dealer showrooms.

It was so nice when I purchased my car and the salesman had an answer for every question I threw at him. While the porter was detailing my car we sat in another S in the showroom and he spent almost an hour going over every feature and function of the car from the PCM to the complimentary Mobil 1 in it's own pouch in the frunk. FWIW I bought my car at McKenna in So. Cal.

I'm in the same predicament as you: choices are 997.1 GT3, 997.1 TT, 991 S, and although Cayman S is highly praised, I find the 911 much better looking. Have had an e46 M3 for past 5 years, manual and looking to upgrade to first porsche.

Also, what would be the maintenance costs of these, considering the buy price may be the same.

Any advice appreciated.

I have had a 997.1S and just traded a 14 Cayman S for a 991S..I have also driven a few 997 TT..I loved all of them but my pick would be 991S..its a great daily driver and a hell of a performer..It handles great..Yes its a bit bigger than the Cayman and is a little less nimble BUT its a lot more powerful and handles great..
I also loved my 997S..I actually prefer that the most at slower speeds as the steering feel was the best..just at fast speeds the steering felt a little scary and the front end was too light..
The TT are fast but I think they are boring.
Cayman GTS is a great car and I would have gotten one but I needed back seats for my little guy!!
I have loved them all but will say the 991S is a lot more car than any 981S/GTS
I don't track but live in the country and have some great twisty roads..I have driven my Boxsters,Caymans,911s on the same roads..I can easily be faster in the 991S than any of the others!!

Old thread, so I'm sure the OP already decided one way or another. I actually went the opposite route... bought a 2013 991C2S and sold it after two years and bought a 2013 997.2 TT. I prefer the turbo for various and some obvious reasons, but also the feel of the 997, down to the more spartan and focused cabin. I prefer more focused and less luxury. In any case, as mentioned here many times before, no matter what you chose you can't really pick the wrong car.
