This is spot on. No different than driving a front engine car. I always trail brake into turns off high speed straits no matter what I drive. The rear engine platform shines after the apex. Sometimes allowing full throttle out of turns. Which only few car can do.

with its perfect 50/50 weight distribution, the mid engine base boxster is the easiest car to drive fast, just keep the rpms up. I still miss my 2002. had a first gen speedster as a loaner a few years ago, and it was the most telegenic car i have driven, amazing. My main reason for the 997 and now 991 is so my family can come along for the drive

I liked the video and it would seem the advantage that the 911 is more weight on the rear tires to give it more grip. The Cayman is an ugly care and it will always be the starter car compared to the more expensive 911. Maybe if they tried some different headlights the looks would be a bit more pleasing. If I had money to burn I would like to get the Spider even though it uses straps for door handles.

The funny thing to me is referring to a 911 as a family car-anyone with a pregnant wife should try telling her this when she wants to buy a minivan.

I drove the GTS again today and started to enjoy the rear-engined feel - that sense of being pushed along. I think it's just different from a Boxster/Cayman and one shouldn't expect it to be the same.

Don't find the smaller cars ugly but do think them less beautiful - Spyder and GT4 excepted...

sorry, the Cayman is not ugly, just not attractive, especially from the front.

I actually love the front of the Cayman (except for the GTS). The thing about the Cayman, Boxter, GT4, etc. is that the lines don't hold up from every angle. From a lot of angles it's great looking, but you can find a few where it just looks off. Not so with the 991, which looks great from whatever angle you view it.

What exactly do you mean when you say "trail the brakes until the apex"? I know the "apex" but "trail"...

IMO, it just means stay on the brakes, though typically with decreasing pressure, until the apex. Different people interpret the term a little differently, but, at least in moto terms it always meant stay on the brakes in some measure all the way to the apex. On a moto, one of the advantages of staying on the brakes to the apex was steeper geometry due to compression of the front forks and quicker turn in. The important skill to master on a moto was how to get off the brakes and pick up the throttle smoothly in one transition.

+ 1, agree 100%. I had a 981 Cayman S, and the rear always looked a little off to me.

Having said this, the 981 is a HUGE improvement over prior generations.

Trailing braking shifts the weight to the front of the car putting more pressure on the front tires. This increases front end grip allowing a sharper turn in with less understeer.

I think most people would conclude that the Cayman looked a bit better in the 987.2 generation, while the Boxster looks better in the 981 generation. If they drew a single line wrong on mine I haven't found it yet.

With the upcoming move to 4-bangers in the 981.2, all of the 981.1s are going to be genuine classics.

I disagree re: the 987.2. I think the 981 Cayman was a quantum leap forward in looks for that car. Shows how just a few changes can have a huge impact. To me the 981 Cayman is the first Cayman that looks like a Porsche. I think they changed the lines just enough to channel some old 911 DNA into the car. And with the proper stance, it has a low sleek look that the 987 never had. I fell in love with the 981 the first time I saw the show car.

Dunno. I feel like the 981 Caymans look a little too much like a 911. The car seems to have lost a bit of its visual identity in this generation. It looks bulkier to me, not sleeker. The additional bulkiness was a good thing in the Boxster, but not needed in the Cayman IMHO. Still a hell of a gorgeous car, though.

I think the Cayman is gorgeous and what the 911 should have evolved into by the 80's if Porsche wasnt so archaic. All my 911 experience (4 mostly flippers) were all before any driver aids,1 had ABS which helped braking in corners, but for the uninitiated they were very intimidating if not down right scary trying to drive hard. No drama at all from my 914. What was a nice drift in a "regular" car or lifting wrong on a curve led to more than one brown underwear episodes, luckily for me very little actual damage but some would swear off the brand forever. The #1 reason I want to get one for the track.
I had a German co-worker that was our resident Porsche expert. He would say that the 911 was designed by sadists for masochists, who else would have a car that the cure for bad manners was to drive harder/faster
