Rear hood struts
Hey folks
Temps finally dropped around here. It was 46 degrees tonight and I went to inspect my engine cover (just changed by the dealer under a Porsche service bulletin) and was surprised to find the struts were unable to keep the tiny engine lid up. (They had worked fine 2 days ago when temps were in the 60s)
I'm guessing this is not normal behavior and the struts need to be replaced. Is this an easy DIY job? I've seen videos on the 993/996 and am guessing the process is similar? Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
NF4

Mine stopped holding up the engine lid a few months after warranty expired. I bought replacements from dealership for about 100 bucks total. Install took me 2 minutes. There are videos on youtube...it is just a little Tab on the end that when lifted allows the shock to release from its mount.

I imagine if you really pressed the issue you could get PCNA to offer an out of warranty good will replacement, as they've been failing right and left. Probably should have been a recall item.

I'm in danger here of resurrecting an old thread, but i had to replace my rear hood shocks on a 2015 model that has always been kept in the best of storage situations. Has anyone else recently had the rear hood shocks go out? I can't recall a similar fail on any other cars i've ever owned. Something tells me these things were short lived from the get go.

Mine failed as well, I believe the replacement part # is 99151255100, Rockauto has the part for $38 each and it looks like a 3 min DIY job. I'm going to order those along with rotors and brake pads in the next few months.

FWIW, the 991.2 seems to call for two of 991 512 551 20, which is showing as superceded by 991 512 551 21 in some places.

The part # in my post should fit 991.1, I saw it from another post here...I just worry they will fail in a year or two, sounds like a design flaw to me...

Yeah, makes me wonder if snagging a generic unit might be better. You can get them in all sorts of lengths and pressures. Wonder what the poundage is on the OE units..

Many reports of these engine lid struts going bad. Back in June, as I was changing oil, my struts were weak and lid kept flopping closed. Bought generic struts off ebay. Went to replace and all of the sudden the old struts started holding again. Strange.

Temperature plays a big part in it.
