Isn't that only for Euro cars ? I hope it will not be on US spec models.

Didn't AP say they removed the side mufflers to accommodate high flow OPF and dB were pretty much the same 991.2 to 992?

I believe this is exactly what they did for the Speedster, which also has a ‘dummy’ GPF. It sounds good, but not AS good as the pre-GPF 991 GT cars. The sound is smoother, less raspy.

Same with the Spyder. Still has same back pressure though.

Have you actually heard one in real life? The sound is just as good. If it's not loud enough that is easily fixable. GPFs are not really the end of the world. There were some problems when manufacturers had to integrate them quickly but now they've had time to refine the tech and adapt their engines to GPFs.

Now, let’s see....in the new 992 GT3 you are effectively getting better than 991.2 GT3 RS performance for the price of a GT3 but because it might sound a just a little bit more muted compared to the previous gen you reject the car out of hand!!!???

Excuse me ...but comments like this simply demonstrate to me that there is an awful lot of people out there who are not true Porsche people..they are simply loud exhaust people. And don’t start with the “sound is part of the experience, blah, blah, blah” because based on this argument no one would ever buy any pre-2012’ish Porsche because prior to the 991 GT3, all Porsches were muted compared to the modern day OPF equipped cars. For example, my 964 RS and my 996 RS are vacuum cleaners compared to the modern editions but then I did not buy them because of their sound. I bought them because they are great cars that are great to drive! Rant over.

I’ve heard my Speedster in real life. I don’t want it louder, I want the raspier engine note. How does one achieve that without also increasing volume?

Let's be realistic. A 17 second improvement on a 7 minute time is a 4% improvement. Most owners don't track their car, and those that do are not likely to see 4% improvement in their times unless they are already chasing pro/pro-am time & skill.

So why do people buy these cars? Lots of reasons - looks, sounds, heritage, exclusivity, whatever. I'm not going to judge who is the "real" owner and who is not, but to hang your hat on a ring time as the only measurement of "better" is slicing the pie awfully thin.

I couldn't tell a difference from the videos I've heard. Someone posted a comparison video in one of these threads and it sounded the same to me between 991 and 992.

Not that it really matters, because I'll be pulling the exhaust and installing Dundon headers anyway.

completely agree. the ring time is only part of the story. 4% improvement which is largely down to an ugly rear wing, nostrils, and Cup 2 tires cornering at 100+. Its not really accessible on the street. From 997.2 to 991 we actually got an improved engine, 40+hp, higher redline, and RWS... all of which can be felt on the street where the car will be used most of the time.

imo they are making the new GT3 too much of an RS, not a good thing for me. Might be good for others.

I do not hang my hat on ring times otherwise I would not bother to own any old Porsche. I drive them for the feeling they give you, the heritage, etc. I remember with utmost clarity the first time I drove a 997 GT3 thinking it can’t be that much better than a 996 and was blown away by the quantum leap in the car. Same thing when first drove a 991.1 GT3. It made the 997 feel ancient. Then when the 991.2 came along, same thing. It was a huge step on from the 991.1 in ride, steering and mid-range torque. I am confident the 992 GT3 will feel no less of an advance over the last gen. Notwithstanding this, I can tell you that having done lots and lots of laps of the ring, a 17sec improvement is very, very impressive. And I will find out first hand in few months time when I will be at the ring for two days in a 992 GT3.
