SAVAGEGEESE - GT3 v Z06 w/LapTimes
#91
Really well-done comparison, fun watch. Both cars are so awesome.
Autobahn South is a tight, technical circuit. Layout favors the GT3. Particularly impressive the Z06 could best it here. Presumed GT3 would claw back the straight line deficit (+ some) through sectors like this at a power circuit, but maybe not.
Different formulation for Cup 2 R may be a worthwhile note. GM has always spec'd a more aggressive Cup 2 than Porsche. Possible their R is a bit more R, too…
In my personal experience and track observations over the years, Porsche is the most reliable make, followed by Chevy. Both brands facilitate DE more than alternatives with track day/specification instructions and alignments, warranty support, dealer support (used small town Chevy dealer for competent track support, but indy for Porsche). No other make is in this track enthusiast discussion, imo.
Lot of online banter re lap times, most comparisons are pointless due to disqualifying details -- different days, track conditions, drivers, tires, tire compounds, car setups, braking variables, etc.
In the real world, there are just so few cars that can hang with the GT3 in this exact context, same day & conditions, 15 minute session, cars set to track specifications, advanced driver. It's a great achievement by Chevy.
Garaged next to a couple of dudes in a BRZ a while back, they turned out to be on the Z06 engineering team. They were geeking on the RS and I was doing the same learning about their work (what they could share pre-release). Cool to see the camaraderie and appreciation between the manufacturer teams in this vid, mirrors my track experiences. Camaro and Corvette guys are fun track mates. Look forward to trying to hang with a properly driven Z06.

Most definitely!! Compound MAY be different, but what is IN FACT different is the sidewall stiffness. The Cup 2R's on the Z06 are run-flats and you need A LOT more sidewall support to be able to run at zero pressure for a length of time. That stiffer sidewall in-turn, will give it a sharper, more direct front-end feel. That will also follow into the rear. Which is something new for Michelin, because they are known for soft sidewall tires (and I hate them for it)
Having said that, it is possible that they are equal to each other in overall stiffness feel because the Z06 is riding on rubber bushings still (albeit very stiff and thinly lined ones), while the GT3 & GT3 RS I believe are full ball jointed without are rubber.

Speed Phenom seems to like them on his Z06 and he was used to running the SC3R's on his McLaren.

Just saw this post. I've been a huge fan of Porsche as we've had them in our family for 40 years. Porsches will always be my favorite car. However, I have to give credit whenever it's due and the Corvette has been putting out great track cars for years, so I'm not sure why people are so surprised with this video. Even though I'm not too crazy about the looks of the current Corvette, I applaud them for putting out another quality sports car. My favorite Corvette is the C6 ZR1 - the lines on this car are simply gorgeous, especially the rear. I believe it was this model that beat all of the Supercars at Road Atlanta at the time. IIRC, it beat the GT3 by a few seconds.

All That ^ tells anyone is that a pro driver that probably didn't have to worry about trashing / paying for the cars tested was able to do less than a sec. quicker on that track on that day than others.
In the real world with people that'll never track them, have huge loans on them, never had the "Sack" to drive them the way these drivers did, those lap times won't matter.
In the mountains / canyons / track day event, the guy / gal cutting the best laps in any car is the one with the skill set and wallet to not worry about what happens to the car if / when the have an "off track" excursion.
I'm not a ZO6 hater, I just don't prefer that cars looks, nor would I ever pay over MSRP for a Corvette (close to or over what most exotics cost). I'll give it credit. It just doesn't matter much to 95-99% of real world drivers out there, other than bragging rights.

Still the last car on that list that I would buy.

There is an engine failure thread in the corvette forum you guys should read. Ticking noises, leaks, etc.
