992 GT3: So I Chipped Out the OPF Material...
- Well, I wimped out and my shop did it (very nice job)
- Shop put the Cargraphic Valve Controller on it
- Sounds incredible with valves open -- but not crack pipe
- Can be controlled from Fob or from HomeLink
- And no added drone (esp in valves closed mode)
- Shop Owner looked at me and said "it sounds like the GMG Center from the 991.2"
- I said: "Yup, great sound"
- Great bang for the buck
- No CEL
- Yes, I know the OPF material is expensive material (so what, don't miss it here in the US)
- No, I don't care that I could have just removed it, stored it and bought another system
TL; DR -- great sound / great bang for the buck / especially for you guys that still DIY (I am getting too old)
FYI for those considering it....

I finished the driver side. It took about 30 minutes max and I was going slow. No need to remove the O2 sensors. Just unplug them to drop the header down. There is about 3/4 inch air gap between the OPF and the Cat. Just be careful not to chisel hard as you approach the end and break thorough. You don't want to damage the Cat. The depth of the OPF is about 3.75 inches.
I will do a comprehensive DIY post with video when I get a chance to edit. Maybe a week from now.

Has anyone had their dealer do it? How much does it run you? Glad to hear people aren't encountering issues with this mod. I purchased the Soul valve module, but may need to do this for the extra sound.

I decided not to bother them with this. Pretty simple project.
It definitely deepens and improves the sound -- without it becoming (and this is my sole opinion) "annoying".
Nice mod. Really low cost for DIY'ers. Controlling it with the Fob is a cinch.
What was interesting is that my shop (thanks for the great referrals here in DFW, guys. Appreciate it) had not done this yet to a new GT3. And they have a lot of 992 GT3 customers.

Mike,
You may have sent me one or both of these videos. If so, sorry for the re-post. For others, these are the two best videos I could find of (1) chipping out the OPF and (2) installing the Cargraphic Valvetronic.
I sent them to my shop to help them. They likely didn't really need to watch as their team really knows what they are doing.
OH -- AND I HAD THEM DO THE GT3RS MAGNETIC PADDLES -- wow, nice upgrade also. Sorry for the stream of consciousness email, but these three mods may be the best "fun / bang for the buck / noticeable" mods for a street focused 992 GT3.
Videos here:
Chipping out OPF FILTER MATERIAL (Chisel it out)
Installing Cargraphic Valvetronic Valve control system (and programming)
NOTE: MOUNTING FLANGE for VALVETRONIC MAY NEED TO BE FABBED? EASY....small piece of metal from Home Depot with one hole drilled.

I installed the Cargraphic valve controller on my GT3 Touring and really like the difference in sound.
This was a "no-brainer" mod for $500.

I am literally in the middle of doing this DIY job right now (OPF delete and Car Graphics Install). I just finished the 2 year/24k mile maintenance. I'll let you guys know how it sounds.
In the video above, he removed the oxygen sensors from the cats instead of just unplugging them. I intend to leave them in and unplug them to get the header off. Since I already had my wheels off for the plug change and brake flush, they are super easy to just unplug them once you take the wheel well liner off. But now that I am thinking about it as I type, I will probably remove the one o2 sensor downstream of the cat so that I don't damage it while chipping out the OPF.

The improvement in sound is louder, but he sound is deeper or more raspy?

I would suggest being very careful when chipping the OPF material, especially if you're using an air hammer : you can easily damage the catalytic converter or the O2 sensor from vibrations. If you can remove them that is the best option.
