Looking to buy a trailer and tie down system for the GT3 RS and wondering what recommendations, experiences, and issues have been encountered. Narrowed the trailer choice down to either Timpte or Futura lowering trailer. What tie down systems are folks finding works best? Any issues with clearance for those using tie down straps over wheels?
For my GT3, I use through the wheel straps from Mac's Custom Tie Downs. I just dont go crazy with putting to much pressure on them. Other cars I use their wheel net straps. https://www.macscustomtiedowns.com
I just bought a Timpte to haul my GT4. After researching the L-track setup, I wasn’t comfortable using a conventional 4-pt tie down setup due to relatively low load ratings (1666 working load) for the track attachment fittings. I just ordered an 8-pt tie down kit which theoretically will distribute the load better, as well as apply load on the track in a more favorable (more vertical) direction. I’ll find out how it works when the kit arrives next week. Futura sells a similar setup to use on their trailers. It looks like it would be a hassle to use, especially with large tires and tight clearance (like a 3RS….) but guys who have used it say it gets easier with a little practice. There are several YouTube videos showing the 8-point method.
The 992 GT3RS is different to previous generations especially if you have done the factory track alignment. Using over the tire straps is no problem on the front with the FAL but with it lowered is a very tight fit and difficult to fit around. On the rears even harder just very little room and Macs tie downs have three tire blocks that are PITA to fit around. At the rear, I use a towel and padded wheel straps all the way through the wheel keeping it low enough that the spoilers don't get pinched. At the front, The over tire straps work well with FAL and airtrac or E trac is the best way to go so that you can avoid the undercarriage aero bits, making sure the idlers are positioned to avoid all spoilers and aero. Macs tie down idlers are super helpful in keeping the straps away from the undercarriage etc. The lift points are more difficult to access than on the 991s and that coupled with the aero you have to be careful with placement even if you are able to access. I don't like to compress the suspension when towing so using the tow hooks is No Bueno for me but others seem to like this route.
Lots of ways to skin a cat but you really have to pay attention to how the straps lay when tightened as they can very easily pinch the aero fins and spoilers. I'm really happy with my system although I would rather not touch the Mag wheels. Putting a thick towel and using Macs padded straps works well with no damage at the rears.

3RS on Featherlite 3110 with Mac’s 6’ fixed end ratchets and 40” padded axle strap. Rear wheel for axel strap attachment is no problem at all, good clearance, as long as you put strap on lower 1/3 of wheel. Front tire strap / hook junction abuts up to some plastic underneath, but doesn’t really cause a problem. I never tighten front straps to max anyway. I can strap my car down in just a couple of minutes. Plenty of clearance between rim and rotor with padded straps even with PCCB. Wheel nets are a struggle IMO.
Interesting to see that a lot of folks are using straps around wheels. My only experience is with race cars and we always used webbing over the tire to tie down the car. Straps seem like they could allow some movement over rough roads.
Macs tie down kit with the wider through the wheel straps for the rear tires (44”) and 40” at fronts (works fine for the 991 3RS). Could always ask Macs to do a 46 or 48” custom through the wheel setup.
Go through d-rings / 4 pt tie down setup. Cross at the front and straight in the rears and go through the wheels at the lowest point you can while avoiding the aero. Microfiber cloths help to prevent damage from rubbing. When hauling, check load and trailer (inc tires) 30 mins after initial set off and check again every hour. The load will move due to tires cooling down from the track and going up hills, sudden/emergency stops will stress the entire system.
Yes - too many checks but have had broken ratchets (even Macs!) hauling over Rocky Mountains and other comedies with poor drivers road debris etc that it’s worth checking that the straps are secure more often than not and your tires are sound.

Easy to use with FAL, and pretty easy to get over the rear wheels with minimal clearance needed (no rubber blocks). I’ve used this setup for 4 years and the straps look new. This method doesn’t stress the suspension or RAS, and allows the car’s suspension to move during transport.
If your tires are hot when you load up, you MUST reinflate the tires after they cool or the straps will loosen.
