Default Coupe or Cabriolet????

All,
I’m going to buy a 2020 911 Carrera 4S. This will be my first Porsche. Should I get coupe or a cabriolet?

That's 100% personal preference and opinion.

My opinion is that unless you drive somewhere that has 6 months of continuous snow on the roads followed by 6 months of nothing but partially sunny 70 degree days then both the AWD and the Cabrio are nothing but a waste of money and a compromise for the typical 1-10% that most utilize either feature ( and never both at the same time just to prove how opposite the two features really are). Not to mention adding needless complexity and weight to a vehicle that benefits from neither.

I have my 4S 991.2 in Sunny fla. It is awesome feeling even at night. Even closed top it has the shape of the 911 coupe. I have the rear steering and what a trip around turns.

Ive been having the same debate and came to the conclusion that Im not a cab kind of guy for the following reasons:

1. I like the sun in very short doses. In my present vehicle I will open the glass sunroof and within minutes usually close it because the sun directly on me bothers me. When I had cabs in the past after a while I stopped opening the roof altogether for this and the following reasons
2. Pollution, exhaust smoke bothers me
3. Don't like to be so exposed to the elements and other people
4. Not as safe as a coupe and I love the silhouette of the coupe

I concluded that the 992 with the panorama roof that lets in light and can be opened was the perfect compromise at the end of the day. Just a personal preference...The cab is an awesome vehicle just not right for me.

Wait for Targa or go with coupe. Cabs are a bit sissy IMO

I've always bought the Carrera S Coupe, this time I'm going for the Cab version. I'm not interested in track days, racing etc. Just think this will be fun for 8 months of the year and no problem for the other 4 months since its so well built.

You don't buy a Cab for the sun necessarily. When it's nice and cool the sun feels good, but with a temp over 65 or 70 it's a morning and evening thing. IMO the wind in your hair feels damn good, and it's a lot less expensive than a boat. The thing is, either you're a Cab guy or you're not. If you're a Cab guy you'll have the top down a lot more than the stereotypical four months of summer. If you have to ask on this forum, I'm guessing you're not a convertible person

Sissy? Only if you're that uncertain in your masculinity, I'd guess....

I'd like to hear the poster's definition of a "sissy" and an explanation of why I'm one for driving a Cab.

Name calling won't detract one bit from the enjoyment I get from driving around So Cal with the top down pretty much 365 days a year.

I'll be relocating from PA to CA next year. Right now I can drive top down for about 7 months (plus the occasional sunny, fifty degree winter day), and I'm looking forward to 12 months of warmth and sunshine. I plan to order a 992 when the manuals are available and am torn between a coupe and a cab. My last three 911s have been cabs, so I'm considering changing it up. Someone posted a pic of a Carrara White Metallic cab with a red top and interior, and now I'm leaning back toward a cab. By the way, an all wheel drive cab isn't an oxymoron in wetter, cooler climates. You can enjoy plenty of top down driving and have the extra grip when the weather turns nasty.

tgcrun - I would vote for the cab. To me, the cab is remarkably quiet with the top up. May as well be a coupe. Sure, to some degree, you lose the classic Porsche lines in the back with the cab top but ask me if I care about the slightly diminished lines of the cab when I am driving with the top down along Highway 1, when I'm carving the canyon roads, or when I am just puttering around LA? The answer would be no. Not one iota.

Thanks for the advice. I love tooling around with the top down. My car isn't a garage queen. I drive it in the winter when the roads aren't snow covered, so there's been a lot of top up driving over the past few months. You're right about how coupe-like it is with the top up. The problem is that after months of top up driving I start thinking that having a coupe wouldn't be a bad idea. Of course, when that first sunny, somewhat warm day comes along, down comes the top, and I remember why I bought a cab in the first place. Plus, I'm having a hard time resisting this:

That would look sweet in Pasadena (I think that's where you are moving, correct?)! Trust me, if you get a coupe, you will be longing for your drop top on many a sunny and 72 degree So Cal day!
