992 Winter Wheels/Tires

So I have a challenge...
except, if you read through this entire thread,
1) finding the rears in 305 is not easy
2) they are SERIOUS money
3) The Porsche snow set has a different offset and they don't stick out as much
4) People say the 295s fit the 11.5 in rear - but I strongly disagree with this based on research from Michelin.
My gut says the 19/20 Porsche Winter set is probably the one to go with - that will mean selling the Classic wheels. Alternatively, I could just find snows in the crazy OEM sizes and drive it. This is for Chicago. I'm curious what the group here thinks.
A) Sell the Classic, get the smaller wheels, they won't look as good but they will be better for winter
B) Find the right size snows for the 20/21 OEM wheels you have and go enjoy. That's why you got the tire and wheel insurance!

2) Porsche tax!
3) Less offset would be IDEAL since this car throws off SO much stuff
4) The difference between 305 and 295 is 0.4". You would not even be able to tell.
A) I LOVE the CC wheels!
B) I would consider the pre-packaged options.

1) Why do they have to be 305s? You want skinnier tires for winter.
2) Porsche tax!
3) Less offset would be IDEAL since this car throws off SO much stuff

I have been driving it through the winter since November without any problem. I have no idea why the dealer told you this won't work, base on what? Size, offset, TPMS....etc. I have done a lot of research and calculation 295/35/20 even has a closer diameter to the OEM rear 305/30/21 than the manufacturer suggest 295/30/21.
Thank you. You may PM me if its easier for you. Thanks in advance again!

For those that got a separate set non OEM winter wheels, what did you do for tpms? Did the sensors the tire installers have work? Or do we need specific ones from Porsche?

My Targa 4S just landed, and after remembering the sticker price, I figured why mess around with anything other than Wheels/Tires offered through Porsche Tequipment. So went to dealer, and received modest discount on 20/21 Carrera S Wheel setup with Michelin Alpines, that included TPMs.

I bought a set of 20/21 OZ Leggera HLT Gloss Black wheels with Pirelli tires from Tire Rack last Nov with TPMS installed and they worked great. There is a setting in the car for the tire size and or winter/summer tires. I just bought a Hybrid Jeep, if you are interested in the set up, take a road trip to NJ for a pristine set with 350 miles on them, cost new $5200. I would sell them for $4,000 including the tire covers and the cradle to stack them.
I already have a set of Forgestar rims I custom ordered, haven't gotten the tires yet, as I am still waiting on the car to be delivered and still doing research. 🙂

TMPS Learn
Thanks, good to know that the tire rack ones work. I in the meantime also found a site - tpms.com that has OE and aftermarket Huf sensors. They state that they are pre programmed but after install they require a tpms "relearn". Is that the procedure you are referring to in the PCM for winter/summer selection?

As long as the TPMS are 433Mhz they should work fine. As to the new ones, in the Macan you need to change to winter tires, in the PCM as to the 992 I thought I read that it learns automatically after driving a few yards. Can anyone confirm one way or another?

I have a set of continental winter contact TS 860 S in 245/35R20 front and 295/30R21 rear that I ran for approximately 2000 miles before selling my 992. Didn’t have any issues with fitment after researching extensively here I was comfortable with 295. Do your own due diligence of course. I’m in buffalo willing to ship if someone wants a deal on winter rubber. Also have weather techs.
My dealer is putting Michelin winter tires on my 992 Classics in 20/21 this Friday. Apparently the 21s were not in stock but have since come in. I honestly don't know if they are 295 or 305, I would guess the 295, but I'm sure I'll find out Friday. Dealer is charging $1,800 installed for the set. Alpin somethings. The Continental Contacts were $1,600 installed and I felt better with the Alpins. I do believe due to low availability the Michelins may only be sold through the dealer due to an exclusive relationship Michelin has with Porsche on that tire in that size.
That said... and porsche might get a better price... but just the tires alone from Discount tire (PA5) would run $2,000 before tax!
and I know Porsche dealers charge at least $100 a tire to mount and balance (at least they were for me)
So please report back after they take care of you - I'm hoping they made a big mistake and honor it! Cause that would be COOL.

I think had I read this I might have tried the 295 route. Instead I chickened out and went with the 19/20 winter set.
That can't be correct - I mean it could, but ... the tires alone are more than that! The rears cost $716 each (for 305).... alas, the 295s are significantly cheaper $550 each (going off TireRack here) Very interesting and yes the Continentals are much much cheaper $380 and Continentals do not appear to be made at 305... so yes, I think you are getting 295s...

I talked to the dealer last week when I made the appointment and he said he had the Continental Contact for $1,600 installed and the Michelins were more. I asked how much were the Michelins and he said $1,800 installed. But that they did not have the rears in stock. I asked whether it would take some time (a couple months) or if they were expecting them, and he said they shouldn't take long. We could keep the appt. on the books and if they didn't arrive we could reschedule. When I called this week the set was completed in. I'll let you know what I find out.
