Default 992 Winter Wheels/Tires

What are people looking at in terms of winter wheels/tires for their 992 cars? I had a good laugh over the official Porsche $7k (SEVEN THOUSAND DOLLAR) winter wheel package for our cars. Unfortunately, our cars are so new that there's not a lot of fitment options available yet. It's probably another 6-8 weeks before I need to really worry about it. That being said, it seems like I should start considering options.

Any recommendations or other options here?

I was perturbed too at that $7k price. I have a tire place in PA that will swap summer to winter tires (including swapping of TPMS, balancing etc) so you can keep the same wheels all year. They also will store your summer/winter tires until you switch back. I have used this place on several of my BMWs with great success.

I am looking at Michelin Alpins (good prior experience) but have to wait for Jan delivery for the rear tires from TireRack. The only other winter tires I can find are the Pirellis which I know nothing about...

I've had very nice experiences with Sottozero 3's on high performance cars. They're more of a cold weather performance tire versus snow tire, which, in southeastern PA, is more of what we actually need. Given what happens to the roads here in the winters, I like to run a set of sacrificial wheels until PennDOT gets around to fixing the potholes. I really don't want to run these beautiful Spyder wheels through a PennDOT winter. :P

I am thinking about Goodyear UltraGrip Performance Gen-1. I will just switch tyres. You can get them with same size. Does anybody experience with them?

You're going to save $$ in the long run by getting a set of dedicated wheels to go with them. Swapping wheels with tires already mounted ($20-50) vs. peeling off tires and putting them on ($200).
That's $400/y vs $40 a year

My idea is to put winter tyres on the porsche wheels and buy forged lightweight wheels and put on the original summer tyres. Both wheel sets will be the same size.
I was told in the wheel shop, that this is not usual as most of the drivers are going for bigger wheels. There was even one 992 owner ordering 21"/22"set

Putting winters on OEM and buying your own is normal - but bigger wheels?? No thanks. 20/21 is plenty big
Unless you want to drive on rubber bands + spend a fortune on those large wheels (larger wheel = larger price) - they will make no appreciable performance improvement.
In fact, I'd consider getting 20" square, and just bump the sidewall ratio (in the rear) by 5% to keep the overall diameter the same

Anyone have info on the new Michelin Pilot Alpin 5? Is it an update to the Pilot Alpin PA4 or something completely different?

I contacted Michelin, they say the Alpin 5 on 305 is not sold here. Malarkey. I got an useless rep. Asked about the 295 but the rep is like a genie but this one grants one wish only and I was left without an answer.

I suggest everyone interested start writing them, then perhaps we get a batch. Big perhaps.
I have the Alpin 4 for the fronts, the rears won't do bc of the wheel size. Would be entertaining to say the least having winter in the front and summer in the rear...

The SA in my local dealer also told me it's difficult to get those tires and suggested 19/20 wheel set.

Here's what I came up with:
255/40 R19 Front (ideally, you'd get 245/40 R19, but they don't carry that size)
305/35 R20 Rear
Pirelli makes a sottozero in both of those sizes:
https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...omCompare1=yes

The speedo difference in rear is -0.71%, and in front is +1%. Overall that's basically perfect fitment at a different size.
It's also nice for having higher sidewalls during winter.

That being said, they also carry the 992 stock sizes, but they're on backorder:

EDIT:
If you do some manual searching, there are some Michelin PA4 N-Specs available:
245/35 R20 (Front): https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...A4N1&tab=Sizes
275/40 R20 (Rear, 10in wheel): https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...XLN0&tab=Sizes
315/35 R20 (Rear, 11.5in wheel): https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...XLN0&tab=Sizes

As noted above , the options are scarce. Suitable aftermarket wheels aren't readily available and winter tires that fit these stock rims are hard to come by. With cold weather on deck, I ended up ordering an official winter wheel-and-tire set through my dealer. The $7k option has since been joined by a $5600 20/21 set and a $4500 19/20 set (WINNER, Standard 992 Carrera wheels). My sales guy gave me a nice discount off of the MSRP for the wheel set, so I am a happy camper and ready for the cold.

I've always run an inch smaller for my winter wheels, though at 19 and 20, it's still the largest set of winter wheels that I have ever run. :P
Here are the specs for Porsche's 19/20 winter-wheel-tire package.
Front axle: 8,5 J x 19 RO 52 with 235/40 R19 96V XL M+S tires,
Rear axle: 11 J x 20 RO 66 with 295/35 R20 105V XL M+S tires.

It's going to be a few weeks for them to arrive from Germany. I am sure that they will arrive AFTER it snows. LOL

You can get that same set on suncoast for $3675 (on sale): https://www.suncoastparts.com/product/SKU992WW1920.html
Which is honestly a screaming deal (even compared to tire rack).

My dealer took good care of me, but agreed, that is a banging deal for someone looking. If you don’t have PCCBs, that’s the package to get — 19”/20” and narrower which is helpful in the snow and on less than perfect winter roads. Real Porsche wheels with winter tires.
