992 GTS - NA engine?
Porsche has just announced its next version of the Cayman/Boxster GTS - with a naturally aspirated flat-6 engine. Does anyone think or hope this trend might make the jump to the 992 GTS, and we could end up with a 4.0 l NA engine???
I'm happy enough with my current 3.0 l TT GTS, but since my previous car was a 991 GT3 I'd love to get back into a high-revving NA engine!

If you look at the 992 GTS testing/scope photos they all appear to have the same turbo cut-outs on the rear bumper. Also there are a number of clips out there of the prototype going around the Ring and to me it sounds like a turbo.
I don't know how they'd go down in HP either for the GTS, which presumably they would with the new 4.0 motor.

Latest trend I noticed is that they are giving you detuned higher trim level engine for gts trim which is a significant change compared to the old bump up s engine strategy. New pana/macan have detuned turbo motor. And they just announced a 718gts with detuned gt4 motor. If they continue this trend, tho I doubt less likely on 911 line up, maybe we'll see a 992gts with a detuned 3.8tts? That's gonna be a hell of a car esp for the rwd version.

From friends chit chat with dealers seems although the 2.5 turbo 718 is plenty fast, sales suffer from folks wanting a 6 for that kind of $. Guess figured for a GT4 variant since sort of a GT3 Cayman/ Boxter better give the buyer the 6 to justify the price. Marketing deal.

Given the nearly 450 HP of the 992 S, the new GTS would need to be closer to 500 HP. And I don’t think they will be able to get the required performance for the new GTS model out of a NA engine (unless they use the GT3 4.0 engine, which they won’t do).

The new NA 6 is actually down on torque compared the 718 4 cyl. The 6 cyl has returned to help 718 sales in the US market which have been abysmal. The 4 cyl is all about serving everywhere else in the world, including China.

Nah, not outside of the Motorsport cars for the 911...
Porsche has said they aren't going to reverse engineer the NA 4.0 to fit the 911 as well. Sadly...

I agree with those speculating that Porsche went to the flat-6 for the new version of the 718 GTS chiefly for marketing purposes, to boost disappointing 718 sales. As someone else noted, while the new version's reported HP is 29 above the current 718 GTS 2.5 4-cyl (394 vs. 365), the torque is the same (309; the 4-pot PDK is actually 317, as I recall) although I don't know whether high useful torque will be available lower in the torque curve than the current approx. 2500 RPM (which is a huge improvement over the 6-cyl 981's). I have the current Boxster GTS as a companion to my 991 and, particularly with its APR stage 1 ECU tune, it's plenty fast.
