A few years back, I was trying to decide between a better discounted 991.1 vs. a base 991.2.
The 991.2 felt like a smooth flying carpet. I appreciated the power and the smoothness of the ride.
But I wanted the visceral feel of the road and the connection with the car and the road. I was coming from several BMW 3 series with M3 driving.
But I admit, I am also old fashioned regarding my media. I wanted a CD player.
But after testing the ventilated seats, this became a "need" living in SoCal.
At one point, one of my dealer sales associates suggested I try a 997.2 they had on hand.
The price difference was shockingly tempting, but what ultimately sold me was the suspension and steering.
I'm not saying get a 997.2.
But I am very pleased with it.
So what I am saying is, if you like the 991.2, don't let the mere fact a 992 is newer means you'll like it better.
I now recognize that pretty much ALL new cars (Porsche, BMW or otherwise) will no longer include CD players and therefore will not be desirable to me.
So pick those things most important to you and enjoy the heck out of it.

992 for a digital car which is what most people seem to be looking for these days. 991.2 for a less digital experience. Slightly smaller but the turbo sixes lack any sort of visceral appeal. Very synthetic sound. 997.2 to get the old school 911 as pointed to above. AMG GT is another option now that the 992 is default auto. Get a V8 with the AMG and probably better highway car.

992 sounds better than the 991.2. I agree the 991.2 doesn't sound particularly good. All modern cars do the synthetic burble/fart garbage. The 992 is less offensive than the others when it comes to this.

Turbo vs NA is a completely different thread. Naturally, if you want the responsiveness and character of an NA motor, you won't find it in a turbo car. The massive thrust and flexibility of the modern engines do have their charm.

992 has better steering than the 991.2 A more natural feeling setup, IMO. Ironically, I'd say between the sound and steering alone, the 992 feels less "digital" than the 991.2.

None of these cars provide the experience of an old school Porsche. The older cars just feedback alot more in the chassis and engine and steering. Those days have been over for awhile. I agree the 997 was really the last old school feeling 911. The new cars, however, are still exciting to drive, just in a different way - so much more sophisticated in terms of dynamics and performance.

Owning an old Porsche is a COMPLETELY different proposition to a new one. Beyond the cars themselves, the ownership experience is more involved and it's helpful to be knowledgable about cars because sh*t happens and you'll have to troubleshoot and get the thing fixed.

I’ve had both, a 2017 991.2 c2s and a 2020 992 c2s, both MT, and can honestly say they’re both wonderful, kind of 4.5-star restaurant kind of quality.

Drive some cars, and see what’s making you smile most.

Your statement that the improved steering, chassis feedback and sound versus the 991.2 actually make it feel less digital is exceptionally pithy and relevant to this reader.
Ironically, the 992 user interface/dash is more digital, but under the surface, in its Porsche DNA bones, where it counts dynamically in its , it is more analog.

I guess you could say the Porsche 992 is a reverse Bill Gates.
The 992 is digital on the outside and analog on the inside.
Bill Gates looks analog/human on the outside, but is digital on the inside.

Default 991.2 vs 992

I recently changed from a MT 991.2 Carrera T to a MT 992 C2S. I miss the rawness of the T, the feel, short shift. I appreciate the refinement of the 992 along with the excellent transmission, extra power, different sound, etc. (even though T was. Fun). The 992 is just a very different driving experience. It’s very impressive. Past was an 84 Targa, 88 Cab, 15 C4S. Hope I have found a true (at least) longer keeper. Wish I still kept done though.

I have previously owned a 991.1 car and have been looking for a newer 911 for the past few months.
I test drove several 991.2 C4S and even a few 991.2 Carrera 4 GTS. I also test drove the new 992 in a couple versions.
In my opinion the base 992 was far superior in just about every way to ANY of the 991.2 cars including the GTS.
I ended up finding a 992 Carrera 4 that will be here in a few weeks.

Much improved driving dynamics and stability and more modern electronics. After spending time in the 992s, the 991's just look dated. I found it difficult to spend that much money on a 2-4 year old used car that looked so dated.

They are all fantastic cars. The 992s are exceptional.

I’ll probably contradict myself here but - I understand missing the analog gauges for nostalgia - but I don’t miss how old the interior looked.

The 991 interior was reminiscent of cars built in 2000. Full analog gauges are one thing - but not building a car to match the times is another. The 992 blends in retro with modern touches - so the car feels more like six figures than before.

The 991 interior was practically a carryover from the 997. I couldn’t imagine Porsche carrying it over another generation...

Combine that with the leap in performance & driving dynamics.

Aside from the updated interior, which makes the 991.2 feel dated (i.e., PCM, steering wheel, seats, etc.), the driving dynamics are significantly better in the 992. Not only is the front track wider, but the staggered tire setup gives you better aero, and additional front-end grip for better turn in. And I swear, even though both generations used EPS, the 992 steering is about as pure as one can get without going full HPS.
992 ✅

i think once you look at a 991 next to a 992 inside and outside, you will know which you want...it won't be close.

Default 992 or 991.2?

I recently moved from a 991.2 Carrera T manual to a 992 C2S manual. It really depends on what matters most to you. The T was wonderful, engaging, extremely fun to drive. It was not as refined and luxurious as the 992 is. The technology is completely different as opposed to the 991.2. The transmission is also very different in the 992, once again dependent on what you want. I also had a 991.1, the 992 is very solid from every aspect. I am still in the process of getting to know the car but so far I am very impressed. Good luck, 911’s are the best, only manuals for me personally, hopefully I will not need a PDK in the future. I know it’s the best DC on the market.
