Preparation for Porsche Dashcam (Front and Rear)
Has anyone spec'ed the Preparation for Porsche Dashcam (Front and Rear) in their 911 and has actually installed a dashcam? I believe this is a relatively new option for MY22 and MY23 cars.
Does it need to be a Porsche dashcam or will any model like a BlackVue work? Is there any additional information on exactly what this option is? What wires are run and where?
Thanks

Am I correct in assuming that the dealer will install the Porsche brand camera with pre-wiring?
Does anyone know the image quality?

Dealer will absolutely install the Porsche camera if you buy one The pre-wiring option, as it was explained to me, was simply to have the wiring there for the dash cam but the camera itself is a dealer installed, extra cost, accessory on delivery.

I wish Porsche would be more transparent in letting us know what wiring is put in place, give us a wiring schematic/diagram, or at a minimum, let us know what our savings would be rather than having the dealership running the wiring themselves. To be honest, the instructions posted above for the Panamera isn't bad at all, but someone posted in another thread said their dealership charged them 7 hours worth of labor just for the front dashcam. To me, that is just highway robbery.

I installed an aftermarket dash cam in my wife’s Lexus. All that is needed is a 5v micro usb connection
i’ve specified the Porsche dash cam pre wiring install on my cabriolet I’ve just ordered for October delivery.
I will install my own camera
if the pre wiring voltage is 12 volts I will just add a 12 v to 5 v converter
also if the voltage is 12 volts I can use that source to supply my radar detector and I won’t need to use a mirror tap
for what Porsche charges for the wiring pre install they are practically giving it away 🤣🤣

If you're going to get someone's license plate, the more resolution the better.
The prewiring is outstanding to have, but from the sound of it I don't think I would purchase a Porsche camera.
Especially if it's true that they would charge seven hours of labor. That beggars belief.

1K certainly is mediocre by today's standards.

I just had an install of front and rear cameras with back up batteries along with a Radar Detector on my BMW. I plan on having the same install on
my 2020 Porsche 992 C4S

I think thy mean that the camera costs 1K, not 1K resolution. The seven hours of labor is to install the wiring for the camera (likely takes much less), if you get the prewiring from the factory you would not need this and the camera is likely just plug and play into a jack placed somewhere in the car - dealer will probably still charge 1 hour labor to install but it should also be an easy DIY.
Given all that, I think an aftermarket solution like the BlackVue above is a better solution from a cost and feature set perspective. It will be a bonus if we can tap into the Porsche factory wiring for power if it is already run up the a-pillar. I'm spoiled by how well integrated the cameras are in my Tesla. It looks like the Porsche factory camera won't show up in the PCM and a rear camera doesn't even exist right now.
