"comfort" option / door unlocking
When I'm walking towards my 2020 992 (w/ comfort option) about how far way will I be when the door handles pop out? They're not... could a low battery in the fob be the cause? Or.... ?

My 2020 C4S did not have it... My 2022 Targa 4S does... I do not believe the 2020's had it in the US IIRC..
For my 2022 Targa I need to be 10 foot or so (could be a bit further)...

For my 2020 Base, I walk up to the car and use the fob to unlock it. My Comfort Access has worked maybe twice it’s own, and I am being generous in that estimate.

The door handles on my 2020 with Comfort Access have never popped out automatically...gotta get your mitt on the handles for them to activate. They work pretty flawlessly though; never have to use the fob to unlock/open the doors.

Very early production cars may have had comfort access configured to pop the door handles out but apparently they had issues with the feature and stopped fitting it early in the MY. As @Richard_Wallace says that essentially meant US MY20 cars didn’t get it as other markets got those early build cars.
No proof, that’s what we heard at the time. Later cars have it, as others say, so I guess they sorted any issues out.

I have comfort access on my UK late 2022 GTS4.
handles pop out only when I am next to the car door. Seems a sensible range given potential security issues with relay attacks.

Comfort package.
From what I understand, there was a timeline in late 2019 build dates that the 2020’s did, or did not have the pop out handles upon walking up to the car with the comfort package (earlier made models did not have them). It was a question I asked dealers when searching across the US before purchasing my 2020 C2S. I almost bought an AG model, but handles did not pop out.
My selling dealer confirmed prior to purchase my Chalk 2020 handles do pop out.
Unfortunately, I didn’t read up far enough on the comfort package, and the power folding mirrors when locking. I really wanted power folding mirrors when locking. I read where the mirrors do fold when locking with the comfort package, so I thought my 2020MY car had them. After the car delivered from 2,000 miles away, I found out they didn’t power fold upon locking for 2020MY. After reading up, power folding mirrors didn’t become standard in the comfort package until 2021MY.

In my 2022 C2 base, the automatically door handle pops up about 80% of the time. For the remaining 20%, if I jiggle the key fob, it "wakes up" and works again. However, if I were to turn on the "extended range" setting, the door handle pops up as I approach the car from 10 feet or so. I didn't turn this option on since I assume it will drain the battery unnecessarily.

Sometimes it works and other times it does not. I got bigger fish to fry....

It's so inconsistent, I think I'm just going to be reaching for the remote.
Just like the homelink garage opener....I'm just going to put that old garage door opener back on the visor...
For those w/ MY newer than my 2020, I hope you're experience is better. I still love driving the car... and that's what matters most.

Would you find it funny or frustrating that when I went into my garage to get something I was startled when the door handles presented themselves?

I don't understand why Porsche engineers are so far behind Tesla. My Model S just works (at least when it comes to presenting door handles) yet comfort access sucks so much in my '23 911 that I don't even bother and am relegated to using the keyfob.
