Default Any opinions on winter Goodyear vs Michelins?

Per title...any thoughts on Goodyear Ultra-Grip Performance Gel 1 vs. Michelin Pilot Alpin 5?

The Michelins are $545 more expensive for a set.

My last set of performance winters for the R8 were the Conti's which were fine for the winter.

Thanks in advance.

Congratulations on moving to CA years ago!

But, that really doesn’t help those of us needing winter rubber in Chicago.

Quick update: I decided to save a little $$ and go with the Goodyear Ultragrips which have decent reviews.

Will post a review when the weather turns and I get a few hundred miles on them.

The ultra grips sound new?
and while too late for my input, I’ve never found a tire better than Michelin unfortunately. I have the Pirelli winters on my 992 and … damn I wish the Alpin would have been available. And I went with them over the conti because of the poor reviews of that tire.

I actually agree with you re: Michelins. But since I've been spending money like a drunken sailor on my GTS, I figured I would save a little for N-spec winter tires especially since I'm not going to be driving rally style during the winter. Just want a winter tire with decent dry grip and decent snow/ice performance. Willing to accept a little more tire noise, etc.

Since you are throwing money at the car (enjoy!) have you considered a full factory winter wheel set? Makes swapping a one hour operation. https://www.suncoastparts.com/product/SKU992WW2021.html

i bought the alpine 5s
amazing tire for winter driving

i live in Vancouver Canada and it snows a decent amount here
and this being my daily driver need to get around town alpine 5s are the way to go

also ended up going a bit smaller on the back wheels 295 so less things get thrown up on the hips in winter conditions
ended up saving a decent chunk doing that tooo

Not for the OP here, but for anyone reading, check with your local dealer for the winter tire sets. They often put them on sales and will save you a TON in shipping.

Another recommendation for Michelin Pilot Alpin 5! I had the series before and that was great as well!

One reason why I'm being so profligate is that I use the excuse for a winter set to get a set of aftermarket wheels. Don't tell my wife. I mount the current OEM tires on the aftermarket wheels and mount the winters on the OEM wheels.

Got a set of HREs getting mounted today.

I had Michelin Alpins on my 530xi T in Buffalo, NY for a few seasons and never had a problem. I prefer Bridgestone Blizzaks but the difference was negligible and cheaper.

Well...it seems everyone has experience with the Michelin Alpins.

I guess I'm taking one for the team with the Goodyear Ultragrips.

I figure it's a N-spec winter for the 992 so, it can't be THAT bad. Lol.

I ran Alpins last winter. The braking distances were shockingly bad.

Still, I hear they’re better than most other winter tire options.
