Breaking-in a 992 GTS over the Sierra Mountains
This is a post of my new 992 and the engine break-in over the CA Sierra Mountains…
I picked up my 992GTS C2M in Northern CA on a Friday morning. Flew in to SFO then Uber to dealer. The paperwork was completed prior to my arrival, and I just had to sign the papers and give the check – took about 10 minutes. Went for a test drive, walked through the car carefully, and then my SA went through the PCM etc. with me. The dealer provided complimentary clear side lights, floor mats, and frunk liner. I was out of the dealership within 2 hours.
I spent the day driving in the Bay to ensure the GTS was good and changed the MPS4S tire pressure to 29/32 psi (partial load comfort pressure). Then prepared for the next morning’s trip to the CA Sierra Mountains to break in the engine over the next 5 days.
My +1,500-mile, five-day trip, started at CA4 and continued through CA88, CA89, CA4, CA49, CA108, US395, CA120, CA41, and finally I5 through the Grapevine. This took me over the highest mountain passes in the Sierras – Monitor Pass (8,314’), Sonora Pass (9,624’), and Tioga Pass (9,945’).
I drove through road construction with new asphalt (crews laying as I was driving) and gravel in two different stretches for about 12 miles including before Monitor Pass - drove very slowly on existing tire tracks and kept my distance from front vehicles but upset a few impatient drivers; and one very heavy afternoon thunderstorm for 30 miles before Angels Camp – the Wet setting performed very well while the Sports/Sports+ did not give any negative feedback. The steel brakes were excellent. Tidal streaming sounded sonically good with the Bose (in comparison to my Vandersteen Treo CT and Mimas tube amps in my home setup). I pushed the RPM and speed to limits carefully, but followed the break-in miles/procedures strictly. It was an epic drive in the GTS! The non-RAS GTS was ultra stable in tight and short curves, and performed flawlessly in wet/dry. Fast sweepers were magnificent. The shorter gearing 992 manual is smooth and shifting was fun and a breeze. The non-FAL front splitter took some wear in very steep mountain driveways, but nothing major. The Sports Plus seats were simple, very comfortable, and provided excellent body support with zero roll.
I have driven in the Sierra’s before, but the GTS simply brings forth the spectacular landscape view and enjoys the quality of these driver paradise roads where the pavement is great, traffic is light, and the curves are just right. I have driven from Denmark to Spain on a few trips, but it’s absolutely astounding the scenic roads we have here in the lower 48 and Alaska – simply mind boggling. Sierra Passes are closed for the winter though.
Some photos to enjoy.

you meant to tell us you didn't have it trailered immediately for paint correction, ppf, and cermamic? you just drove it straight off the lot?
seriously though, epic trip and a great way to break in a new 911. i wish you many great miles ahead.

Did you pay CA sales tax to drive away the car?

SO refreshing to see someone putting miles on a 992 without first wrapping it and coating it with various magic plastics and chemicals. Good for you. I've done the Sierra passes many times on various motorcycles (ducati multistrada most recently) and it's truly beautiful. Love the car.

You Sir are the Man.
How does the GTS feel driving in the wet ? Still sure-footed and planted ?

Exactly 12 months ago I picked up my GTS and drove it 60 miles home in the rain. Tomorrow it's going back to the dealer in the rain for its annual oil change and check up. Still no wrap or anything other than regular carnuba wax. It's a car. Drive it. Enjoy it. Don't baby it.

Those are some great roads. The Sierras are a great place to drive and sightsee.

Great pics and love the "all business" look of the black and agate grey combo.
BTW-you might want to change the "miles to empty" info in your inner right gage to a different info display since the outer right gage shows the same info.
