Surprise allocation (C2S) at MSRP —> take it or wait for 992.2?
Apologies, I recognize that 1) nobody can predict 992.2 launch timing, 2) future allocations, and 3) decisions are highly personal, but I’d love your thoughts on whether I should take this allocation earlier than I’d anticipated.
Details below…
Background
I’m a longtime lurker and have been eyeing my first 911 for the past couple of years (just wrapped up an expensive remodel, so money’s been tight).
I’d planned on saving up for about ~12 months to pay with more cash vs. financing the whole thing, given the high interest rates (and to minimize the need to liquidate too many stock positions).
Also, all things being equal, I’d love to pick up the 992.2 (especially given my preference for waiting 9-12 months anyway).
Today (2/19/24)
Which takes me to today: I walked into my local Porsche dealer today (Beaverton, OR), only to find out they have an allocation that a handful of buyers passed on:
Sales rep says it could be 18-24 months (worst-case) if I want to wait for a 992.2 allocation, and I definitely do not want to wait much longer than 12 months.
If I do want to take this, I’ll need to drop off a check for 10% before someone else, to secure the allocation.
What would you guys do in my position?

- Price: MSRP + commitment for 2nd year maintenance at the dealer

IMO, definitely take the C2S allocation and enjoy the heck out of it this summer!

Bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush...or something like that. Take it and enjoy it!

I am in a similar situation to OP. After a long wait, I just got a call offering a C2S for this spring/early summer. I have a 2020 C2S now, and I would probably spec this allocation with the same options, right down to color. So, question is, take the allocation and hope not to lose much when 992.2 becomes available (likely 12-24 mos. in my case) , or keep existing which will be around 6 yrs old by then?

I spoke to my SA yesterday (I currently have an opportunity on a C4S….but I was holding out for a Turbo). He said that Porsche released allocations for roughly the next 6-7 months, which makes him think that this is it for 2024…and then the .2s will start in Feb/March of next year.
I’ll would actually prefer a .1, but given the removal of most of the colors I would want (green, yellow, etc) and the fact that there isn’t a single available Turbo build slot, I’m trying to decide if I drop ~$180k on something that isn’t the color that I want and is a 4S instead of Turbo.
For OP, I would take the C2S if that is what you want (assuming that one of the colors you want is available).

I was one of the people who passed on this because I already had a T on order from another dealer. They told me 2 years for an S or T wait last summer after already waiting 9 months on the “list”. Obviously they were wrong! 10% down is a little steep, but who knows!?? CPOs seem to really be coming down so you could always go that route and order a .2 when they’re available.

I've been told by well-informed sources that the first 992.2 cars will be the GTS model which will be a hybrid and PDK only. Heck no, I'm not waiting and not interested and anxious for my March 2024 Carrera S build,

No, you should wait for an allocation with an ADM.

Buy this one and get on the list for the 992.2. Trade in the 2.1 when the 2.2 comes in.

I had a similar experience 2 weeks ago. I was on the list for a 911S and was advised by my SA that it wouldnt be till around August for the allocation. He called me 2 weeks ago and stated he got an allocation and I had to decide immediately if I wanted the car. I assume someone dropped out on the day the configuration was locking and they were trying to fill the spot. I jumped on it at MSRP. Really happy and the the car will arrive in late May.
