Have you upgraded from a 997.2 to a 992 ?
I currently have a 2011 Manual 997.2 Cab4S and thinking of upgrading to a 2020 PDK 992S.
If you have done the switch, very interested in understanding if it was one of your best car decisions ever (or not) and why ?
Thank you !

Better 992 resell: Targa 4s vs GTS w/ Aerokit
Aside from personal preference, what would you rather see in second hand market? I am sure these are different segments as one has a classic look and one is more sport-look orientated. Not seeking a perfect science of answers here. Just curious as both options are available new and I like them both but might only keep one.

I had a 997.1 manual. My 992 PDK is currently held up at the port in Germany. Although I am going to miss the excellent manual on the 997, I am looking forward to learning how to use the paddle shifters in the new car.

997.2 Turbo Manual > 992 C2S Manual.
Short term happy. Long term no.

I went from a 997.2 GTS 6-speed to a 992 C4 PDK. The 997 was a completely different animal than the 992; a bit more raw and tactile, with lighter and more communicative steering and chassis feedback (partially because of the hydraulic rack, but also the way road data fed through the chassis and the GT2 carbon seats I had in the car). The interior was feeling/looking pretty dated when I sold the car in 2017, and even my 992 base engine mated to the PDK (always used in manual mode) delivers performance that eclipses any 997 save a GT3/2. The 997.2 was a great car in its time...but the 992 is simply a better vehicle, with even a base offering better performance (and build quality) than a two-generation-old GTS. The only VERY slight edge the 997.2 has over the 992 is the hydraulic rack, but it's inconsequential in day-to-day driving as the electric rack is very, very good.

I owned a manual 997.2 2S for 5 years, did 30,000 miles in it, then had a 6 year break before buying my manual 992 2S in 2020. It’s just clicked over 20,000 miles.
Both great cars but for different reasons. I loved driving the 997, I enjoy owning the 992. Tech is at least 2 generations improved on the 992 but my memory of the 997 is how it just flowed through bends, made cross country drives memorable in a way I’ve not experienced in the 992. Man I had some great drives in that car. For sure the 992 is faster, way better connected, and….mmm, not much else to be honest.
Having said all that maybe if I lived with a 997 again for a while I’d see it differently, and I’m not about to sell my 992 to try lol!

Own 997.2 GT3, just bought 997.1 GT3RS, have 8k mi on my first 992 T, and my second 992 T just arrived.
Not all models are created equal, but if we're talking generations in general, one is revered as THE modern classic 911 while the other is very capable and its cabin is a great place to spend time in.

Had a 997.1 6 speed. Kept it for 14 years, I loved that car. Bought a 992.1 in 2021. Given a choice I would not go back to the 997. Although it was a wonderful car, the 992 is simply light years ahead of it in terms of build, structural rigidity, comfort, and ultimately overall performance. Yes, it’s bigger and heavier and not as analog as the 997, but everything else makes up for those deficiencies.

1977 911S MT > 997.1 MT > 997.2S PDK > 991.1S PDK > 992.1S MT.
997.1 and 997.2 were comparable. Each generation past the 997.2 was a substantial improvement in power, handling, technology and interior over the previous generation. This is true of the 992.1 in every category except engine sound which can be adequately addressed after market. The power and handling of the 992 platform in all trims substantially exceeds the 997 platform except, maybe, the 997 GT3. Your money and car - buy what you want. Both great cars.

If I had to choose between a 997.2 GTS and a 992 I'd pick the 992 without reservation.

I think 997 had the best manual transmission Porsche ever put on a regular 911 since 997. I never liked their 7 speed version, and they added that additional gear for the European mileage efficiency laws. I think for driving pleasure 997 base or S models manual beats 992 T or S manuals any given day. Meanwhile 992 is a car that is way ahead of 997 in all aspects. Tech alone is leaps ahead, interior is much better built and feels fitting to the price of the car. It is also a dream to track it.

You’ll get different opinions but the one I have is the 992 in any configuration is much better than my 997.1 S. The current model is a better car all the way around.
