18" wheels on a 993?
Aficionados,
I thought I read somewhere that 993's had problems with 18" wheels installed and they should only be shod with 16's or 17's. Any truth to this???

As I understand it, problem is with '95 993 - later versions have no such issues. Do a search on the topic and you will find lots of info including how to modify a '95 to support "18 wheels.
And by the way, the help you get from this board is only made possible by those of us who purchase a membership. If you find this board useful, by a membership, it is the best investment in your car you can make.

I'm all for getting people to sign up for membership - but that is a bit of a push there. I know for myself I used to board for somewhere (i think) shy of a year prior to becoming a member. I was always amazed at how I got soo much help from the community and liked that a lot! Then one day my own guilt came to play of how much value I got out of this board and i contributed and got a membership. I just want to be sensitive to keep a community feel (whether member or not) so that we keep the character that's been built over the years.
I for one would be happy to contirbute more to operating the board if ever asked to. Perhaps we should have a holiday drive if the board needs some $$$.
Cheers,
Boris

oh and i forgot to answer the original question:
Brace for steering rack is approx $40 at the porsche dealer. The part # is: 993-347-131-02
You'll also need two screws. Part # for those are: 999-218-103-09
Takes 10 mins to install. Piece of cake!
Cheers,
boris

oh, and I'd like to hear the Pro-17" wheel folks please, on why they'd rather stay with the 17s" than 18"s. Just trying to convince myself not to jump onto the $2.5K 18" upgrade ...maybe I should post this a a new topic, sorry Dascar, didn't mean to alter your thread.

Just purchased 18's to replace the stock Targa 17's. Funny, the unique Targa wheels were one of the things that attracted me to the car in the first place, but now they look too small. The switch to 18's, for me, was purely for a cosmetic change.
On the other subject.....I think anyone who benifits from this site in any way would/should be happy to contribute, and although they should not be pushed into doing so, a gentle reminder is not a bad thing.

The argument against 18" wheels is they increase weight - and this is unsprung weight. The most competitive/fastest wheel combination will be a 16" wheel that some of the '95's came with. However, the argument for 18" wheels is simple:
1) Much better asthethics -fills in the wheel well nicely and this especially true if you lower the car.
2) updates the car.
3) the 18" wheels are wider allowing you to add a wider tire.
In my case to offset some of the weight I went with the technology (hollow spoke) wheels.
Thanks,
Boris

Burning Brakes
I just received my brand new 18" Sport Classic 2 wheels to my 993. They are manufactured by BBS and are cast, 2-piece art of aluminum
7,5" and 10" wide.
7,5" and 10" wide.

Wheel and tyre combinations
Wheel Tyre Weight
Tech 18 F PZ N2 18kg
Tech 18 R PZ N2 23kg
Tech 18 F S02 N1 20kg
Tech 18 R S02 N1 25kg
So a 2 Kg difference in the tyres !
Would be interested to see other size combinations.
Cheers, Maurice
