WTB Varioram setup
Hey folks,
I've already reached out to the big name scrapyards to get quotes, but I figure I'd ask the community here. I'm looking to retrofit my '95 993 with a varioram intake from a later model 993. I believe I will need the following 1996-98 993 parts:
Varioram intake and manifold (993-110-081-02 & 993-110-181-04) including all of the vacuum units/tubing/hardware that is normally attached to them. If you've got a later model ('97-'98) with the "varioram" script cast into the intake, I'd prefer it.
Vacuum tank (993-110-060-00) (the egg crate looking one)
Vacuum lines 915mm and 1200mm (900-918-005-40 & 000-043-300-56)
Oil breather hoses (993-207-143-03 & 993-207-151-01)
Inner portion of the air intake box (993-110-030-07)
AC lines from compressor (993-573-097-03 & 993-573-099-03)
AC line grommet (993-572-565-01)
Cruise Control bracket (993-110-498-01) and linkage (993-110-129-01 Level, 993-110-013-04 Pull Rod, & 993-110-229-03 Tab Washer)
Anyone have a spare varioram kit sitting around from a wreck/super charger install/turbo install? PM if you do please with your asking price.

Some of the components such as the vacuum lines, actuator solenoids and the actuators themselves may need to be replaced as they are 18+ years old.

I just went through this. JM993's thread on the Varioram install is quite comprehensive and very well put together, use that as a guide.
I was lucky, found a complete Varioram set up on Ebay for $500 a few months ago. At that price I just HAD to buy it. Somebody put a TPC supercharger on their car and decided to get rid of the parts that were removed. But even after I had all that I ended up spending several hundred more on vacuum lines, oil breather hoses, vacuum actuators, etc., etc. Get the SAI delete kit from Patrick Motorsport.
Make sure you also have the wiring harness recall done, you will need the updated harness in order to plug in the Varioram. If you're not certain you can call PCNA, they were able to verify that my car had the recall done.
And yes, you will need a custom chip, Steve Wong did mine. It was in the $500 range. You can have him tune it for LWFW and can also delete the immobilizer (if your car is a later 95) should you so desire.
I deleted the cruise control and re-used the A/C lines by routing them under the intake instead of over.
I'm very happy with the final result, it adds a noticeable oomph in the mid range.
Good luck!

Thanks for the tips Ilko. You definitely got lucky finding the complete varioram unit for $500!
Interesting note about the A/C lines. Wow are new 96+ AC lines expensive from the dealership (even a more reasonable one like Sunset Porsche)!

I found a set of used 96+ A/C lines in Germany for a reasonable price but realized the connectors were stripped so they were practically useless. In the end I decided to just use the lines that came with the car. The engine bay now looks "slightly" different. Kinda cool, because you can tell that the engine's definitely's been worked on!

An additional point is that you dont have to cut into the wiring harness and run a wire from the dme to the rear fuse box for the resonance flap. You only have to move the pin to the correct position at the rear fuse box, see: https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...l#post12048349
I also used 96+ ac lines.
Is it worth it? I can certainly feel and hear the difference, though it is subtle, it is more enjoyable to drive.

Here's a link to my DIY thread for those who are curious.

And yes, varioram makes a noticeable difference. Something like 44 ft lbs of torque difference at some point in the rev range IIRC.

Varioram units are proving to be hard to come by. Both DC Auto and LA Dismantler confirmed they don't have any in stock. Still waiting to hear from Parts Heaven, but they don't see that many 993s...
