3.8L Upgrade
Hello All! I am a new member but have been reading Rennlist for quite awhile now. I am an addict like everyone thanks to this site and Gert with numerous upgrades to my 95-993. I am considering a 3.8L upgrade and would like to know if FVD offers a nice package or if anyone has already upgraded and can share experiences with the 3.8 they are running. Lastly I have searched for foglights but turn up nothing. I am interested in the foglight air duct option again that FVD offers but at 895.00 I would like other price options. Thanks for all the great info!

Hi Ed:
There are many ways to upgrade your 3.6 and I'd suggest that you start with a custom chip.
To do a proper 3.8 upgrade, you'll need P/C's, RS cams, and RS intake valves to make the whole thing worth doing.
I'd also strongly suggest that you install close-ratio gears and the RS lightweight flywheel kit before you do the 3.8 upgrade; its a FAR bigger bang-for-the-buck,...

I have not had the 3.8 l upgrade, but I have driven one. My C4S has the FVD chip + exhaust (300 hp). Driving the FVD 3.8 l conversion (340 hp) and my own 3.6 l with FVD chip (300 hp) back to back I could not tell the difference. I guess it could be measured, but no significant seat of the pants feel. This is why I'm currently looking into a Ruf conversion - more bang for the buck!

Just regear your box, leave 1 and 2 alone, throw a g50/21 in, 3rd, g50/21 in 4th , g50/21 in 5th and move your 5th to 6th. Spend the $ for the steel syncro in 2nd if you can(no need for anything other than stock syncro in first) and put steel in at least 3,4, and 5(not much $) 6th too if your are not trying to save $ but probably not necessary. That is the very best $ You can spend on making your car quicker and more responsive. That is also the cheapest regear as far as gearsets $ etc...

Steve can make all that happen for You easily. BTW I had the 3.8 and it is the worst bang for your $ mod available for our cars. The factory 3.8 kit is like 13-15k now with the Euro where it is and You have not turned a wrench yet.

Glen, I had part of your conversation about gears, with Steve W last night via PM. From the actual gearing charts that I've seen posted on these boards, can this swap really make that much of a difference? How do you quantify the difference in performance? To make the exact changes that you have listed above, how much do you think it will cost?

I have G50/20 gears and routinely run on the tracks with other 993's that have a G50/21 or something there abouts depending on their gearing preferences. Given a comparable 993 with G50/20 tranny coming out of a track corner onto a long track section is almost equal given the same run out of the corner. I have had experiences where I have come out of a corner with a G50/21 993 and it would easily pass me by rather quickly with the same run out of the ocrner, even if I was leading the run! Obviously the G50/21 993 is shifting through the gears much quicker. Turns out these cars also have a light weight flywheel/clutch as well because that is the obvious time to also upgrade/replace the clutch. Many also put in motorpsort LSD which also make a huge difference over no LSD or the factory LSD. But the point I am making here is that the effective horsepower gain is very noticeable, some say around 40 HP in performance.
If you have the $8K (+- 1500, probably plus) it is a very effective upgrade that transforms your car into something you are not accustom to! If you have even more money put in a Porsche motorsport racing LSD.

While the gearing may make a big change, I can easily say that for the same $8,000, I can SC the car and realize a HUGE change. Not sure why one would spend the same amount of $ for a "40 HP feel" as opposed to an actual "100hp gain".

Thanks all! It looks like I am going to look into the re-gearing. I already have the factory LWF sitting in the garage so looks like the that and the new gearing will keep me happy. FVD is located in Pompono Beach (Ft. Lauderdale)

Hi everybody!
I have a C4S 3.8 which is the X51 option from Porsche, and I'd like to maybe try a chip.
S3, you're talking about a FVD 3.8, what means FVD? Were you happy with their chip?
I would be happy to hear from people who did try a chip.
Here in Belgium we have an excellent specialist PSI Motorsport (which by the way makes now a PSI GT2-R which is competitive to the Vipers). He has a solution, but I'd like to have different opinions before making the choice.
EC993, I can help you as this is my first 993, and I never drove a 3.6l.
Thanks
JP
