Absolutely. One of the challenges of creating a product as opposed to a “one-off” device for personal use is to insure there are no unwanted “artifacts” of the mod. That’s one of things I’ll be looking into next week once the prototype is built and installed.

Will this work on the 1996? I know that the ECU is different from 97/98.

Would be awesome if this worked on the 96... Count me in as well if it does.

This will be tested soon but since the mod only affects the immobilizer and since the same immobilizer P/N is used in late 95's through 98's, the likelihood is high it will work for all of them. Early 95's used a different immobilizer but the same (or similar) technique may work for them as well.

Am i the only one who has never had trouble with the immobilizer?

well except that one time when i went to start it after winter’s six month storage and forgot i had to use the fob. But that was operator error, not a system issue.

Thank goodness someone else asked this!
I've been wondering the same thing as I personally do not have an issue with the immobilizer.
Yeah I curse to myself if I get distracted setting up self before turning the 993 on and it doesn't crank (moment of "oh $hit now what") then I remember to just hit the fob and try again.

I went thru that when I first got my car ( first Porsche, was shipped and never driven by me). I parked it in the driveway, unlocked, maybe 10 mins. Then try to move into garage and it won't start. Panicked that I just may have bought a lemon with plenty of problems. Then tried the fob.

I've also never had any issues with the immobilizer. Doesn't seem like a big deal to me to insert key, turn to on position, press button, start car. Works every time!

No, nothing so simple as a dead fob battery. Electronics are not infallible. "Poop" happens.

Prototype #1 is now installed and working as expected: the car starts anytime the vehicle is unlocked - no need to do the lock/unlock dance. A fair amount of testing has been done in the last few days including numerous short and long trips, stops for errands (turning the car off), and overnight stops. There's more to do but so far, no unwanted side effects have been noted. The FOBS work like they always did and communications with an OBD scanner appears to be fine.

The picture below shows the current prototype. (The switch is there for test purposes but it could end up in the final design used to switch back to "Immobilize Mode" if desired).

By coincidence, the prototype just happens to fit the OBD hole (second pic), which is kind of neat. I routed the wires down under the side carpet and attached them to the main wire loom running under the driver-side footwell. This area is accessible without having to remove the seat (!!) by lifting the carpet and making the connections using IDC T-splices. No soldering is required. An alternate location for the unit is in the footwell under the carpet. There are several location where the unit can mount without creating a lump in the carpet. Accessing the on/off switch (if there ends up being one) might be less convenient, though.

This is a bare bones unit for proof of concept. Some bells and whistles may be added and it needs to be bullet-proofed, but all in all, looking good at this early stage.
For those that may just be tuning in - this mod requires no changes to the ECU or Immobilizer doesn't require a starter relay bypass, and can be installed in 15 minutes.

Conmments and suggestions are welcome, especially whether or not the ability to switch back and forth between Immobilize/Demobilize is important.

More to come...
