Default What’s this noise?!

1996 993 turbo.

I hear it at idle, and slow speeds. Also when I turn wheel left it gets louder. Coming from engine compartment.

Power steering pump? Low power steering fluid?

That is the power steering pump under high load trying to literally drag the stationary tire's tread as you turn the wheel. The forces turning the wheel when the car is stationary are very high and makes for high demand on the pump. Once rolling the sound will probably subside because the pump doesn't need to work nearly as hard even when rolling slowly.

Of little or no consequence, just check your power steering fluid level and top it off if needed.

If you find you are constantly refilling the reservoir mostly likely your rack is leaking. There are several How-Tos on DIY rack removal-servicing & replacement here on this discussion board.

Power steering usually needs little or no servicing other than when the rack leaks needing new soft parts or replacing the power steering toothed belt, a very durable part usually done when the clutch is being serviced. Also, there is a filter built into the bottom of the power steering reservoir so when folks have a leaking rack serviced it is a good idea to replace the reservoir bottle an inexpensive part.
Hope the above helps,
Andy

If you're hearing it at idle and if it is coming from the power steering pump it may be cavitation caused by air entering the system. Check for cracks in pipes around the pump. I had this on another car, no leak of fluid but was sucking air and making a lot of noise.

Then I would look into the belt first. On our cars, a skilled technician can replace the belt w/o removing the transmission or engine.
Also, a clogged filter in the base of the reservoir may be taxing the pump. Replacing the reservoir is an easy DIY job.

Replacing the steering fluid reservoir in the engine compartment Pelican Number: 993-347-015-01-M103 as it has the power steering fluid filter built into it that should be replaced. I used a turkey baster to draw most of the fluid out of the reservoir before removing it. I stuffed lots of rags under it so when removing the old one I avoided fluid all over the engine. One of the clamps holding the hoses to the reservoir is not reusable. So you will need to get a substitution clamp for it at your local auto parts store.

Default Took to my shop.

Steering fluid was a little low. Added and noise is gone.

Looked all over for leaks and nothing, not even in rack, etc. they said That the pump is very sensitive to the fluid level.

thanks for help all.
