Will be looking in the next year for my first Porsche and I've chosen the 993 for obvious reasons. I heard that the C2 is more of the "traditional" option but how does the C4 compare? Is it much heavier? Is it quicker/better off the line? Is one more "sought after" than the other? Is the C4 more difficult to work on with added components? Does the C4 have any known issues with the system?

Any input would be greatly appreciate!

More C2 out there so more choice of cars. C4 were limited in sales, I think there were even more C4S than C4 (not sure if that is correct but someone please correct me if not). Depending on options could also affect how they compare. I have C2 with option 220 LSD and ABD it helps with traction and handling. C4 came standard with that option. Overall not a huge difference in handeling, I only have limited seat time in the C4 a longer test drive a few year back. As far as weight, I believe that it is about 100-120lbs more with the C4, If you want to use the car is more varied weather, heavy rain, light snow, very cold weather it may be of some advantage to get the C4. You need to drive both and also take in to account the whole car. If you find C2 or C4 in a spec you like go for it, I don't think you'll be disappointed. Also if you like a C4 but don't want AWD you can delete it with a reversible mod. FDMotorsport sells a AWD delete kit among others. Good luck in your search.

I much prefer the C2...lighter and more fun...some people like the idea of AWD...I can't stand it. So it's up to you...both are terrific machines.

Buy the best car you can find! I have owned both of them and the differens you actually notice when you drive the cars are less than the difference you can have from different makes of tires!

The four wheel drive adds just 50 kg and is a 100% trouble and maintanance free construction!

Also, the AWD is heavily rear biased; during normal driving, it sends 95% of the power to the rear wheels, from what I recall. If it detects slipping, it can send I think up to 30% to the fronts, but I could be wrong about that number, The system adds about 100 pounds of weight and it's very very reliable. I'd say buy the best example you can find and C2/C4 shouldn't be a big consideration for most

My two cents. The 993 is old enough now that for most people it isn't a performance thing any more. And honestly the driving feel is probably so variable example to example that it will come down to the individual cars you test drive. When I looked for mine I was open to any configuration - C2/4/S - and focused solely on the quality of the particular car. It's tough enough to find a car that meets your criteria, I'd go as broadly as my taste allowed on all factors like RWD vs. AWD, color, etc.

Others have said as much, but...your looking for a 20+ year old car. Choose based on what are must have items for you...color, mileage, options, and price. Service records, are a big plus also. I assume you are looking at just coupes, and with a manual transmission.

Your budget will be the greatest limiting factor in your search.

Definitely coupe and manual. Black or Arctic Silver. Black Interior. Mileage in the 0-85k range. Would like a 95 for SAI reasons but if the right one comes around I don't mind doing the flushes/preventative work when needed.

One failure point with the C4 is the viscus clutch which sits at the front of the C4 trans. When I had my trans rebuilt, I found out that mine was split in half. I posted my findings and had replies saying that they had seen it before. One possible cause is doing hole-shots. Just one thing to check if you do get a C4.

If daily driving in a part of the country with bad weather - C4. If nice weather or a point A to A car only - C2.

I initially had a 997 C4S b/c it was my daily driver in Chicago w/ winter shoes. When I got the 993 I wasn't going to subject it to that type of abuse and wanted a C2.

The C4 braking system is different. Higher pressure and trickier to work on. I think replacement units are big $s also. Having said that - I have no idea how frequently they need repair. Could be almost never and a mute point.

C4 cab super rare...only 601 sold in US.......143 of the 1998
