Default Film, First start in seven months.

As my contribution to the fuel and winter lay up debate i filmed my first start in seven months, battery on tender during the winter, no oil pressure build up with removed DME relay, no fuel additives, just a twist of the key, 80k miles engine, never rebuilt.

Hmmm. Every single time I let mine sit for longer than a few months, within 20 seconds or so the lifters start clacking until they repressurize. 10 minutes of driving and it purrs like a kitten again. I'm sure after 7 months the ticking would be noticeable. Maybe my 993 is just noisy....

I find it pretty strange that my engine have silent lifters and no hint of smoke the first time I start it after the winter! I bet I'ts just luck!

I did this one time by accident and had a hell of a time getting it to restart.

I've only had one occasion where I started mine after about 2 months (I done this probably 10 times) and had the "tapping" noise. It then went away after about 5 minutes. Not sure why it did it that one time, but I was kinda freaked out when it did...alas, all was fine!

What you cannot see is what this does to the internals of the engine - yes no visible damage from the outside, but an engine that was cold started after several months of the oil wicking off all the contact surfaces, like the camshafts, will have accelerated wear. Essentially for the first few seconds many rubbing surfaces are wearing with little or no lubricant.

This sort of wear is incremental, and having seen scored camshafts and bearing wear, it does happen.

As far as noisy lifters go, they vary a lot - I think it depends on how worn the sealing O rings are. I have replaced plenty where the O rings are completely missing, they had broken up and were washed away. Those lifters typically are noisier because they leak so much that it's harder for them to pressurize.

Cheers,

Mike

True what you say! But the owners who "overnanny" their engines are probably the same people who decides to have their engines rebuilt thousands of miles before it's actually necessary just because of a not 100% leak down test or a semi noicy tappet for a minute or two after start up!

Us die hards just laugh and drives the **** out of the cars and eventually face a lower $ per mile than most!

Each to his own!

Mine has sat for three years now, but plan on driving it this year - I'm sure the lifters will be noisy!

Been too busy driving/enjoying the other cars when I do get the chance to drive the sport cars.
