Default Can Anyone Recommend a Short Shift Kit

I'm looking at getting a short shift kit and I'm seeing a few options online but they are all from companies I'm unfamiliar with. Has anyone purchased and installed a short shift kit that they are happy with?

Yep, I agree. Darin has great products and is always willing to assist with the install over the phone or at his shop. Honestly, it's pretty straight forward and with access to a lift a definite DIY

FDM Short Shift Kit 964/993 (RS-style)

FDM Golden Rod (RS-Style Shift Rod)

And if you want to step it up even more. Here is one of his new products. So tempted if hadn't just installed his original kit.

I have the FD SSK and golden rod. They are for sure great modifications and I wouldn’t change them. The golden rod is probably the more impactful part.

One comment - the throws of the SSK aren’t that “short”. If you’re looking for a really notchy and short shift, the FD SSK might not meet your needs. I hate to make any comment that seems even mildly critical because overall the modifications are awesome and worth every penny.

Another vote for Darrin's SSK + goldenrod. It's not too short a shift so friendly to the transaxle, and feels great. I added a solid aluminum shifter ball and the weight seems to help with feel.

Another vote for Fister's short shift kit and Golden Rod; that said, you should do your homework by running a search since there has been plenty of talk about short shift kits over the years, and Darin's offerings are not the only choices out there. For me, they hit the right intersection of price, feel and aesthetics.

OK, sounds like the option from FDM is the way to go. Thanks for all the responses!

What's the difference between the old FD AWD SSK vs the new version? Didn't see much explanation on their website. Andy

I have the FD goldenrod but with the RS short shifter. I DONT recommend it. I recommend you get everything from FD instead.

the FD kit eliminates the ball joint under the shifter. The RS still has it. For some reason I’ve already broken 2 of them. Not sure why. If I did it all over again I would go with everything from FD

Another option is the CAE shifter. It's a bit more hardcore and designed for track use, but I love it for the street and the ergonomics can't be beat. Super short shift throws, with zero slop.

I had one and took it out- kept popping out of second gear. don't know the brand- came with the car- but there's a lot of research out here on it.

CAE shifter?

If popping out of gear, shifter not adjusted correctly. One of the nice things about a CAE is that shifter fork stops are built into the shifter so the force is absorbed by the shifter and not the internal stops in the gearbox as usual.

It sounds like the stop was adjusted incorrectly such that second gear was not fully engaged.

If one takes the time to correctly adjust a CAE in terms of stops and pattern center there is no other shifter as nice in my opinion. These adjustments are not available with any other shifter.
