Default Labor Expense Question

I received a quote of $3,000 +/- for the labor only on the install of the following:
1. all 4 rotors;
2. brake pads;
3. pad sensors;
4. front and rear brake lines;
5. Front and rear springs;
6. Front and rear shocks/struts;
7. Front Spring tops;
8 Front bellows and bump stops
9. Front control arms;
10. Front sway bar links; and
11. Rear Engine Mounts.

It included an alignment and corner balance.

I am not capable of any sophisticated wrenching on my own (hood struts, and idle control valve taxed me), but wanted to save a little on parts. Reputable shop in the northeast. Fair deal or keep looking?

Thanks in advance

Do you know their hourly rate charge?

3000/150 = 20 hours of labor

I did not ask that yet.

I suppose a better question for me to have asked the forum was how many hours should I reasonably expect be charged for this work.

Is 20 shop hours the amount of time this work should take?

That price is crazy. Location of NE US is vague at best.

So based on experience, the following seem like reasonable times, when considering that they are all in the same area. Tasks inherent in each job that are repeated are not considered.

Front Corner:
Rotor, pads, sensors, 30 min
Control arms, 15 min
Swaybar endlinks, 15 min
Spring job includes top mounts and bellow/bumpstops, 1 hour
Brake lines...variable. If not super rusty, 15 min...if super rusty, sky is limit
Misc Time, 15 min
So call it 2:45 min per corner. 5.5 hours for front

Rear:
brakes 30 min
Brake lines, as above...call it 30 min
Rear spring/shock...1:45 being generous
so 5:30 hours rear.

Engine mounts:

1 hour

Bleed brakes
1 hour

Alignment and corner balance....roughly $500

Rounding up a bit, you get 13 hours of labor. Typical labor rate is roughly $125 at indy shop.

That would put you at $2,150.

I think your quote is very high because all these times are very generous

Quadcammer, thanks for that info. I'm better armed to negotiate a better deal!

Struts have an $1800 price spread depending on what is put on and what is put on has a profound influence on handling and flexibility in tuning. Ask about what specific brands and models he plans to install.

Thanks Andy. I am committed to Koni Active and M033 springs. Should have specified that.

That number is a little high but I wouldn't call it crazy. That's a 10-15 hour job depending on a few factors. If this shop charges $100/hr and they're quoting 30 hours, then yes, that's crazy.

Agree with the 15hr or so job. I just paid $3300 labor for a complete 964 C4 engine out stripped down to long block replacing all seals, valve adjustment, clutch, FW, welding planetary gear, suspension, all oil and fuel lines, front diff input and output shaft seals with alignment etc.. Cost of parts $6K plus suspension and used rear sways.

Negotiating a lower price with a shop for necessary work based on internet feedback is not a tactic I would recommend. Building a relationship with the shop you choose based on research, respectful (but educated) conversations/questions with the shop concerning the work, along with a mutual understanding of your expectations and goals for your 993 are key in my experience.

agree here. Maybe get a few quotes and compare prices. It would be interesting to know the hourly charge.
