Default 993 WB Values are UP!!!

From the steadily strong prices over the past year to the most recent set of sales, there's no question that the demand for these cars is real. I've seen quite a few clean examples of C2S cars fetch north of $135k at dealers (Sloan, etc.).

This low-ish miles C4S that had an accident went for $101k after fees, and it literally shows the accident on its quarter panel, among other things: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/19...carrera-4s-27/

This C2S, which also had an accident history, went for $140k: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/19...11-carrera-12/

Even NB 993s are holding strong but any clean example of a WB car, a C2S in particular, seems to carry well into the 100k range as a starting point these days. Question is, do you think this is a bubble or are we hitting an inflection point where more people are realizing the value of these cars?

The challenge with various assumptions about what they “would have” done in another format is just that, assumptions. I am on the ground here and inspected all of the cars so I know what they were/weren’t. I was the buyer on the Ocean Jade car (I sold it to Rudy in 2014! So it held some meaning for me) and was a bidder on the Turquoise car until $215. IMO the cars up to now (sale still going on) brought market correct pricing based on the cars as presented. Having known Rudy personally I think he would be pleased. Of course anyone else it entitled to think otherwise.

The recent Sloan C2S was pretty rare colour combo combined with low miles and good condition. Rare specimen.

Here's what I posted on another thread.....

But more realistically, not really. I want to get another one so this doesn't help. I'm no expert in 993 valuation but these are inflated numbers for sure in my estimation, I am doubtful that this is the start of a long term trend. I'm not sure they are necessarily rare cars either. Since I started my honest search in December, there are numerous cars available for sale in North America any given week, yes not all 11k examples or may not be exactly the spec you want. If you are looking for that sub 15k mile car then you pay I suppose.

I was listening to Collecting Cars podcast yesterday, Edward Lovitt was talking about a Singer he sold on the platform....sold for more than he was asking when he had it listed on a non-auction site. Much more! Auction sites perhaps draw a different audience and also the process encourages overspending.

As has been said, COVID has encouraged splurging on such items by those with much money to spare. I think once things open up and the focus shifts from COVID, people will spend on other things and values will drop/settle.

This is my layman's analysis.

^ I don't know either way but I am curious, if you think this is not a long term trend, why not wait a bit to purchase?

I just bought. But yes I would wait to buy another until late in the year or next.

Yes I know (that you just got one), just thought if you felt it was bubbly now you might wait for things to cool off rather than buy in the middle of it. Or you were fortunate like me and able to score a good deal amidst all this craziness.

It's been coming on for the past year. COVID bump or not, at the end of the day, there is a relatively small number of wide body 993s and I would expect values to grow in a very stable manner. I don't see the bottom dropping off.

I bought my c4s with 43k miles in very good condition and no stories for $85k a couple of years ago. That was on the high end of FMV. I'd say that same car is easily well over $100k.

Porsche prices are high across the board. At least the stuff that interests me - 993, touring, 997 RS, etc. Some of it I expect is a bubble but I could see the 993 not correcting as much. Regardless of C19, there’s a love of air cooled and also 80s/90s nostalgia. My guess is they will dip but continue an overall climb.

Any WB that is very nice, lower mileage, color, records is gonna continue to appreciate... in a few years y’all are gonna look back to this post and wish you bought more ... in the realm of things the C4S and C2S were produced only from 96’ - 98’ very low production numbers for today’s standards. Last of the Air Cooled and Porsche isn’t making any more of them.

C2S to North America 97’ - 98’ a total of 1,752 cars

C4S to North America 96’ - 98’ a total of 2,327 cars

That was literally almost 25 years ago.... many were wrecked, totaled, very high mileage, bastardized etc....

Ah ok.....here are some comments on on my purchase.....

I think I closed the deal early Feb if I recall, in terms of price agreement.

a) I looked at compares from the previous 4-5 months
b) I shopped another C2S with similar specs, lesser condition. Could have had for $2-3k less than what I paid but multiple panels were repainted and interior looked a little more worn, similar miles.
c) Came to conclusion that the one I bought was maybe slightly on the higher end of the market, but not by much based on another C2S I knew that sold.
d) I didn't pay asking
e) I didn't want to wait as the car I bought was most of the way to my choice spec (not dream spec).

I certainly wouldn't have paid $130k+ for one. That's over $200k CAD after duty and taxes once the car is here. Seeing where the craziness is going, in a way I'm glad I bought when I did as now others will get similar ideas and may likely land their asking, especially on auction sites.

This is a key factor as well. Porsche has done an extremely great job of cultivating enthusiasm for the brand across the line up, even outside 911s. The community is so vast across the globe and it's bringing in new people. The brand and culture that go with it is strong. Even when at the track with the GT3, I have guys coming up to talk about the car (guys from Merc, Chevrolet, Ford), young and old.

I sold my 11,000 mile no stories C2S in January 2016 for $200K, That was the only reason I sold it. As the value was increasing, so was my fear of something happening to it while I was driving it. In a perfect world, I would have a garage queen, and a driver that I could drive hard in the canyons while not worrying about rock chips. I will always love 993s

Tony your story is kinda a sad one. Inflated prices denied you the pleasure of owning a C2S 993. The monetary gains fade but the memories of years or enjoyment leave an indelible impression on your soul.

I was fortunate enough to get some track time in my car with other 993 owners in the early 2000's before values made that taboo. Great times!

Sadly mine is also a garage queen now. C4S with original paint & 32k miles. It's one of those "bastardized" turbo conversions though. While done right and fast as hell I realize it will need to go back to stock someday when the time comes to cash in on the car. Putting it back to stock maybe more painful than the sale.

My car doesn't have a turbo but it's been bastardized to RWD. I was fully aware that this affects resale value, but frankly I don't give a s**t. I'm having too much fun and the car drives too good to care. I don't have any intention of getting rid of it.

If I kept the thing stock and didn't spend a dime on it, I could easily have flipped it for a $20k profit. Instead I spent a bunch of money that probably lowered its resale value, albeit making it a far superior driving car.

No regrets.
