Default Interior Mods - The Steering Wheel. Momo or no Momo

Looking for guidance here. 1998 993 C2 great condition basically all original including steering wheel, four spoke with airbag. Looking to change to Momo Prototipo with horn being black leather Porsche crest. Great looking but also don't want to hurt the integrity of the 993. I would keep all parts so I can change back whenever needed / wanted. But what do folks think? Keep the original or go Momo? Thanks very much

If you don't care about the airbag, I'd say do it. It's a common mod and looks great IMHO. Singer thinks it's the way to go.

Who cares what other people think - its your car - what matters is WHAT YOU THINK

Enjoy!

Original- you don't believe in the usefulness of airbags?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimated that as of 2015,
frontal airbags had saved 44,869 lives. In front-end crashes, airbags reduce driver fatality
rates by 29% and passenger rates by approximately 30%. Coupled with routine seat belt
use, the fatality rate dropped by 52%.

Do it ... mine is the OEM Porsche Cup Wheel .... “who needs airbags we die like real men.”

I'm with the "don't mess with the airbag" camp. This mod doesn't work for me if you lose your airbag.

It's easy to change back, so as others have said - if you like it, keep it.

My face isn't pretty but I like it where it is, so split the baby by moving to a 3 spoke GT3 wheel w/airbag.

Anyone know what percentage of 25+ yr old airbags are still viable?

Infinitely more than the non-existent ones :-)

(non-snarky answer: https://www.edmunds.com/car-safety/d...gs-expire.html . tl,dr: mid-90s cars and newer should be fine)

Do it. It's a great mod. I have a 993 cup wheel that I've been itching to install. Considering how little mileage I put on the 993 every year, the statistical likelihood of a major accident is very, very low for me.

Want your airbag back? Re-install your stock wheel or put in a 996 three spoker.

Yes, this is why the 996/Boxster 3 spoke is popular. No insurance issues and is a drop in replacement.

I think the 4 spoke factory wheel is rather hideous so I did go with a MOMO wheel and I love it

Momo for the win! You can store the precious 4 spoke steering wheel for posterity.

Running without airbags is a legitimate concern. So go a out and get racing seats and six point harnesses. You will be far safer, and can preserve the stock seats and the the three point belts as well. Ha! It's a slippery slope.

The MOMO Prototipo vastly improves the look of the interior, especially with the SMOOTH Prototipo leather matching the smooth all leather dash. Go for it. The Airbag isn't really a concern as I put very limited fun only miles on my car. The car is 25 years old. Tasteful reversible mods are the way to go and vastly improve the experience.

When was the last time you heard someone say..... I don't want my car to shift better, my engine to pull stronger, or my exhaust to sound more raw. I *like* the sloppy loose handling...please don't improve and update the suspension! Why would I want that sexy Italian steering wheel or those sharp looking coco floor mats? I like my fugly old steering wheel and dirty worn original matts. They are OEM and some of those stains are from 1995! I love my dull, cloudy headlights and dim fog lights. I don't need to see at night. I would never want BBS rims, lol, and I LOVE the scuffs on the rear bumper that the previous owner's kid put there.

These are awesome classic air cooled Porsche cars that become ridiculously good when massaged and tweaked. You can look at it and save it as is for someone else who may never exist... of you can celebrate that YOU own it and make a hobby (obsession) out of improving it one, small, expensive mod at a time and then driving it like you will own it forever, not worrying about the odometer.

Walking by it, bone stock in the garage is no fun.
