Default Where to stop in New Mexico

I plan to drive my 993 from Redlands, CA to Edmond, OK soon, and need an overnight stop recommendation in Gallup or Albuquerque--trying to find something with covered or underground secure parking.

Best to drive through to another, safer spot.

Have you not seen Breaking Bad?

Personally, I’d try to avoid staying overnight in the major metropolitan areas. A Hampton Inn on the side of the highway has some risk, but I’d bet the risk was lower than some high crime metro.

Maybe look into the Utah / Colorado route as well. A bit longer but maybe a better trip.

Yikes. That's not a good drive because there's just nothing out there for long stretches of road. Personally, I'd take the extra 5-6 hrs and drive through Vegas and Denver. You are hard pressed to find underground or a parking garage just cuz its cheaper to lay some asphalt and call it parking.

That being said..I'd be fine staying in Albuquerque at the Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort or the Marriott Pyramid North. The Marriott is near the hot air balloons so if your car is jacked you can hop on one of those and try to locate it.

paranoidandroid,

Thanks very much, this is the kind of information I was looking for. My searches kept turning up the usual Motel 6 clones, with no decent food in the vicinity. I think the Marriott will do nicely, and we can get room service or eat in the hotel.

None of the alternate routes suggested were appealing. We've driven this several times before to visit relatives, stopping at either Gallup or Albuquerque, using Hampton Inns, but they are getting harder to take--as wifey and I get older we like a bit more comfort and security. On this trip we will be dropping off the Porsche, inspecting the house we are in the process of buying in Edmond, OK, then flying back to CA for a second drive back a few weeks later while the moving van does its thing.

Yeah the Marriott should be just fine. It’s got the standard Marriott decor from 20 yrs ago but clean and consistent food. I’d eat a Marriott burger with a sunny side egg in it any day.

Hampton Inns are ugh. It’s sketchy people in the parking lot, high school/college kids up all night, and old folks arguing in the morning about the powdered eggs and oatmeal.

I’d suggest Courtyard by Marriott North in the Journal Center business park, or the Marriott Pyramid North very near it. Both are situated in a reasonably good part of town. They don’t have parking garages (that would be the Hyatt downtown or maybe the Doubletree downtown), but these Journal Center properties are nice suburban office park settings with low concentrations of zombies.

Is anywhere really safe?

Thieves are complete idiots, if they are looking for a high end vehicle to steal or break into, they're not going to hunt in the worst part of town either...Years ago my wife and I stayed at The Palace Hotel, in the finance section of San Francisco, we had valet the 993 across the street in a parking garage, I was worried all night long, nothing happened, but I didn't sleep much that night either.

Having said that, I agree with others, best to either stop sooner or drive further, Albuquerque is a major drug distro hub (take a look at a map) so all that comes with that is there. I have several friends that left terrific jobs in Albuquerque because they didn't want to raise their families there.

I stayed at Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort with my 3 little kids this past weekend while driving thru NM... great spot, very safe and beautiful -- cheap as well.

I’ll defer to the locals.

As a former frequent business traveler to KAFB, the closer you can stay to Sandia Heights, the less risk I would perceive.

My go to hotel / food was the area around Coronado Center off Louisiana, just N of I40; it was not a bad drive to base and had a lot of options.

Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort Is a very nice property, but it may be a ways out of your way. Up to you on that point, but I would have no concerns with that property.

Drama Queens!

Albuquerque is like any other town with 750k residents, it has bad parts and great parts. Let me know if you need help, I live here and can provide some good recommendations.
