Default Did I find my oil leak?

If so, where is it coming from? It looks like it is coming through that seam where my finger is pointing in the photo. Passenger side rear. I have it all cleaned up and will continue to watch for new oil over the next few days. Can anybody tell me what this area is and how do I get in there? The engine compartment is perfectly clean and oil free. Mind, this is just a minor drip, probably a dime size on my floor every two weeks but the car is now put up for the winter and I thought that I should investigate.
Thanks in advance for any help!!!!!!

Hi, there is no chance that the oil is actually originating in that seam. That is part of the car's shell and body structure.

I suspect, if I am reading your pictures right, that whoever serviced the car previously has split oil next to the oil filling tube which has seaped down into that area.

If you check engine side, down beneath the oil filler tube, you may see a build up of oil. A little degreaser and a clean should clear that up.

Regards
GR

Except that is precisely where the oil filler neck feeds through the frame to the oil tank. If there is oil dripping from that seam (which is completely plausible) then there may be a leak in the hose that snakes through there.

The other option would be a leak from the power steering reservoir which, when combined with some grime, could look like oil. I'd inspect around the reservoir. I had a leak in mine which was the reservoir itself, not the hoses connected to it. If all is clean there, it is unfortunately the filler neck/hose for the oil tank.

The spill theory is plausible as well but unless that happened recently, I doubt it would still be dripping. Based on some of the other pics, it looks like this has been going on for awhile.

Here's some pics from my empty engine bay. You can see the hose in the second photo peeking through one of the holes.

thanks guys!!!!
I went back out and did more investigating.
there are signs that there has been a spill and cleaned up.I soaked that area down with simple green and gave it a good scrub and rinsed it off with water. I went under the car and the water was dripping through the same crack/joint the oil was in.
Also there was burned up oil on the heat exchanger so I cleaned that up as well and gave everything a good scrub.
My last oil change was exactly a year ago so I dont have a lot of hope that it is still dripping down.
Ill watch the area now that it is clean.
Thanks so much for your advise!

I had to replace the hose that runs through that frame rail. Car only had 26K miles. It rubbed a hole in it. The hose runs from the oil filler to the tank. Royal pain to change.

Another related question.
would these hoses drip at rest or would the car need to be running to pressurize to move the oil around to cause iit to leak?

I did it myself, but I do everything myself including engine and transmission rebuilds. There is no pressure there, but there might be some sloshing from the tank.

I had similar symptoms and to fix the oil leak also had to replace oil filler tube. There are few threads on this, including this one https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...placement.html, that I used as an inspiration.

Get two cans of spray electric motor/electronic cleaner and hose the entire area down then it will be bone dry and it will be easier to determine if you have a leak and where it may be coming from.

Well, I just ordered a new oil fill tube from Pelican.
I took off the wheel well liners. There really isn't any sign of a oil spill from inside of the engine compartment. There isn't any sign of a leak inside of the engine compartment either BUT there is oil coming out of that seam . It must be leaking inside of that box beam and dripping out the seam ( I hope).
Anyway, the tube will be here in a week or so and Ill tackle changing it out!
BTW- I didn't order the end "insert" that goes inside of the tube, underneath the clamp as it appears that one is included in the tube. Can anybody confirm this for me?

Yes, insert is included with the tube.
That's how I ended up with spare insert :-)

we really shouldn't be surprised when any rubber part fails on our cars after 25 years. It doesn't matter if you've done 500 miles or 500,000 miles, 25yr old rubber is way past its service life..

That oil filler tube is not rubber, it's corrugated plastic.
