Hi RSA,
Yes, the engine in all the air-cooled cars has fixed valve timing so as the torque/sound/speed builds the rpm climbs into its sweet spot above 3500 RPM.
This feel is preserved in the 964 & the 993, later 996-forward cars with variable valve timing have even torque from just above idle and so have lost the winding up feel of the earlier cars.

I don't have any experiece with the 964, but when I started looking for a 964 10+ yrs ago I mentioned it to my Porsche mechanic and his recomendation was to get a 993 and not a 964. His opinion was that the 993 was a superior care in every way over the 964, especially from a mechanical reliability standpoint. I took his advice and bought a 993. It has been incredibly reliable and a blast to own.

You currently own an iconic Turbo so be careful you don’t sell it and later regret letting it go (Personal experience). All Porsches are unique and in most cases spectacular specimens if maintained and upgraded correctly. I suggest you find some Porsche events and find some opportunities to drive both 964s and 993s to ensure they are really what you want to replace the Turbo with. Unless you plan on keeping the Turbo and adding a second car. I own a 95 C2 and it’s a great car. I also have a 912 Hotrod that is raw and fun to drive so really it’s what you want for the experience. Good luck on the hunt. RRC

I currently own an 86 930 that I have had for dozen years and a 993 NB that I bought in early 2020. I have also had an 88 911 Targa, 81 SC, 98 993 Targa a/t(wife’s) and a 79 930 race car(500 whp), however, both of these cars are keepers!

930 and 993 are quite different in character, I think “thrilling” is a one word description of my 930 and “refined” is the one for my 993.

The rush of power 930 delivers as the revs increase is intoxicating but the suspension is stiff and rough compared to the 993. The rear suspension in the 993 really makes a big difference, much quieter and smoother. I think a 993 could easily be a daily driver whereas the 930 probably not so much. My 930 is more like a wild animal.

I feel very fortunate that I am able to have both of these iconic cars. Getting up to redline in my 930 in second and third gears still gives me a thrill that can’t be matched in the 993 but I would not want to go on a long road trip in it. However, I should point out that I am close to 70 so my perspective might have been different when I was 35!

I have a 964 C4 and 993TT RWD. Wanted the last two gens of AC cars with the 964 C4 extending my driving season. The 964 C4 system is from 959 and while complex, it is reliable unlike some people who are just heresy. The 993 AWD is a bolt on system, like the 996TT, and easy to convert. Given that you have a 930, then a 993 makes sense. Furthermore, 993 pricing is a better value than a 964 right now. 964 market prices are ridiculous and not something I would pay personally.

Even after all these years, I still find the 993 the most beautiful porsche out there. Much better than the 964. On looks alone, 993 hands down without blinking.
