Today one of my Porsche independent shops here in SoCal was having difficulty setting OBDII monitors on a '96 993, and requested my help.
While the shop owner drove, I monitored the process using a Porsche PST2. After driving for a total of 50 minutes, two trips were completed
with all monitors set for the CA emissions test. Of the total 50 minutes for both trips with cold engine starts implemented using the tester,
it only required only about 15 minutes of addition driving for the PST2 to indicate completion of the last trip. The Porsche independent was
able to return the 993 with a completed required CA emissions test to the owner while he waited.

LoL... I'm such an idiot.

So, I cleared all my readiness flags and was ready to smog but took the car in for a service because the antilock brakes warning were throwing red. Picked up the car today and was gonna head straight to the STAR station. For reasons I'm not exactly sure, I decided to test the readiness just to make sure there were no surprises as I headed into get tested.
DAMN IT... All my flags were blinking and yellow light.

Me: Did you guys disconnect the battery?
Mechanic: Yeah, we had to - to replace the module.
Me: Doh!

Now I have to do the drive cycles again....

Perhaps a silly question - but after completing the drive cycle steps, rpms can then exceed 3k rpm, correct?

Right, no restriction on RPMs once you complete the tests (other than redline)

Alternatively, can't ya just drive it. Flags will reset unless you are in a big hurry to do your emissions test?

some cars yes, some cars no.
this process is a major pita and has kept me away from 993 / 996 GT3s while still in california

With late Porsches, e.g. GT3s, all the monitors can be SET without driving and just using a Porsche tester. Many independents are aware of this!
