Drove her home from Fayetteville GA to Ft Lauderdale. Drove great. It has been sitting in a garage for approximately 12 years. On the way home discovered the odometer is broken which will be the first fix. The top doesn't close all the way. It gets close. We got it to close by some physical finesse and will not open it again until it's fixed. Needs at least a new top. The current one is old and may be part of the problem. Replaced the cables and got the timing synched at Cali Auto in GA. Looking for a top shop in South Florida.

Welcome JGuti,
Oh, you're going to luv the 993 Cabriolet. .. A timeless Porsche Carrera. .. The Rennlist is a deep well of air-cooled 993 resources. . A search or ask will tackle almost any DIY .. Good luck.
Could you share the make/model of that driveway canopy? .. It appears to be a killer solution when outdoor DIY needs conflict with Mother Nature's sun.
PM sent with a nearby Tampa, FL quality speedo shop; DNA Speedometers. .. www.dnaspeedometers.com ...

Congrats on the car.
How do you know the car was “sitting” for 12 years if the odometer is broken…?
How do you know the prior owner didn’t use it regularly for 12 years with a broken odometer?
Are the tires 12+ years old?

More info
Thank you for the replies and tips. I have been reading the forum the past year untill I took possession of the car. It was my brother in laws. He passed away March 2021. I have not gone through all the paperwork yet and will post more as I piece together the history. He had challenges and would dive into things heavy for a time then move onto something else. I know he replaced the windshield in 2011. He may have driven it a few times after but my sister in law said it was at least five years before he died when she was in it yet but it could have been more. The mechanic who replaced the tires said they were stamped 2013. He got heavy into motorcycles and the car sat in the garage. After a new battery, it started up. Had the fluids flushed/changed, filters changed and new tires. Right now I do not have a clue of the true mileage. The windshield work order mileage is what the odometer says. He never took long trips and only maybe drove it a few times after. I put 700 on it to bring it home.

Sorry to hear of your BIL's passing but I'm glad that you were able to get that great car!
I purchased a "mystery" 1996 993 a few months ago and you are going about things the right way.
Address all fluids/wear items/safety issues first then drive her until anything else pops up! These cars are amazing! Also, you have Specialized ECU repair on Oakland Park Blvd. They are a great resource for anything electronic that may arise (ask me how I know)!!
Enjoy the car and the immense resource that is our amazing Rennlist community!

On the top - I discovered after months of frustration with mine not closing completely, sometimes latching, sometimes not and ultimately stripping the gears in 2 latches (which are not that hard to fix yourself with the kit) - that the transmissions (behind the panels on each side of the rear seat), were not completely bolted down and moving as the top raised/lowered. Once I tighted all 3 bolts on each side - my top is now flawless. I've heard these work their way loose.
May be something simple to check.

The odometer is typically just a small plastic gear. It’s a DIY if you’re just a little adventurous.
Here is one vendor who sells the gear. They have a DIY on the link too:

Good luck with the car.
