Ok - so weight is the same - in that case why go with wosp over stock or rebuilt of stock unit?
Looking at options and opinions here.
Is the wosp superior in every way - ie reliability and provides a better start?

I weighted mine at about 3,6 kg , Wosp is 3,5 kg .... I will refit mine as it work find.
But the Wosp is definatly a superior starter, more powerfull and less current drawn, witch could help in very cold days or if your battery is low.
And also for those who are using the tiny LifePo batteries...

The Bosch unit originally specified for the 996 turbo also spins up the engine so much quicker and easier than the 993 original.
Dropping the transmission is actually quite easy - leave the engine alone - and are you due a new clutch? Clutch slave cylinder all ok? Do both at the same time?
Interesting times - looks like a few people having starter motor problems and engine drops happening at the same time as me.
Engine will probably come out tomorrow - have been doing a little bit each day over the last few weeks.
Just the transmission oil lines and transmission cable to come out. Everything else has been disconnected.
The WOSP starter arrived today. I think its heavier than the stock unit.
Stock was around 4.5kg - WOSP 5kg. Note this is the tiptronic starter version.
Also I see a design flaw with the WOSP - or maybe not. Will confirm after installed.
But looks like the signal cable connector will block access to the lower bolt on the starter.
This will make it more difficult to get the lower bolt with the engine still in the car.
However, the shorter body of the motor assembly could mean it is easier to reach the two bolts to the remove the starter.
Will have to complete the install and review this.
Otherwise - WOSP unit well packaged and looks well built.

Question - anyone know how to wire up the WOSP unit?
I am assuming exactly the same as the stock unit.
But need to change the connector on the signal wire.
No idea K7.
Maybe metal fatigue over time? Maybe imperfections in the metal that lead up to this after years of use.
Reminds me of my AC bracket - one day a corner piece just broke off.
I'd be curious to see of any other tip owners have had the same issue.
Ok - jobs finally done and everything is back together.
Here are the final thoughts on the process and starter motor:
WOSP unit is heavier than stock Bosch starter by .5kg (Bosch = 4.5kg / WOSP = 5kg). WOSP website lists the unit as 3.8kg.
WOSP unit is model LMS681 for 964/993 tiptronic.
WOSP unit is NOT a direct fit for the ZF4HP22 transmission. The mounting plate is a fraction too large.
The side of the mounting plate can be filed down to make the unit fit properly.
The mounting plate must be installed in one direction only. It looks symmetrical but it is not.
Wire connection to the WOSP unit is the same as the stock Bosch unit. However the trigger wire needs to be connected to the unit via a male lucar terminal. Instead of cutting the stock cable to fit the male lucar terminal I create a short connector cable to mate with the stock wire - so no cutting of the stock terminal was required.
The engine cranks faster and quieter. 2 cranks and the engine fires up. Nice sound from the starter.
Other notes:
Engine drop is not that difficult to do. Partial drop to do starter motor is the way to go - way easier.
Ground wire works fine from transmission mount to transmission connected to chassis - stock is from starter motor to mounting point on the chassis.
Other than these issues - I am happy with the performance of the WOSP unit.
Just wish it was actually lightweight, and wish it would fit the cavity out of the box.
Pic - WOSP unit does not fit the cavity. Some metal (around a 1mm-2mm needs to be filed away to make the unit fit properly.
