Default lightweight starter motor

Guys
Just having some starting issues and think it could be the starter motor.
If I'm changing the stock unit out - has anyone changed to a lightweight option?
Any comments or recommendations appreciated.
Thank in advance.

I did a lightweight, high-torque starter on my 68 SWB. It's great. When the time comes I'll do the same on my 993. I believe I have the WOSP unit.

Thanks for the feedback gents.
I have looked at the WOSP option.
Any comments on the WOSP unit? Direct fit? Reliability?

Anyone know the weight saving between WOSP and also the Bosch sr0451n compared to stock?

Works like a charm!
I'm not absolute sure about the direct fit coz i needed a spacer as i have a GT3 gearbox, but as it says...

Thanks for the replies gents.
Ok thanks for the details Holger.
Hope all is well with your 993 beast.
I will have a chat with design911 and most probably go with the WOSP unit.

Hi Kos
Ok - so weight is the same - in that case why go with wosp over stock or rebuilt of stock unit?
Looking at options and opinions here.
Is the wosp superior in every way - ie reliability and provides a better start?

Finally have the starter motor out. Ahhh - what a lovely job it was - not.
And a lovely surprise for me - a cracked housing.
So somewhere in there is the piece that broke off.
Any recommendations? I'm thinking full engine + transmission drop and separate to inspect and fix things.

If anyone is wondering the stock unit is about 4.5kg in weight.

Did it crack maybe while you were removing it? I assume if it had cracked before while the car was still running, you would have known quite quickly

No - i don't think it cracked while taking it out as I was holding the unit while the top bolt came off.
The last start did sound a little strange.

that cracked and gone section of the starter slides into the transmission housing.
so the broken off section is probably hanging out around your flywheel/clutch plate.
your thinking is correct on dropping everything to inspect.
will be interesting to see if anything else is in the trans housing, hard to imagine how the starter broke off like that.

Why not run a borescope / USB camera into the housing first? Maybe a shady shop broke the support years ago and simply reinstalled the starter...

I cant be certain from the one pix provided, but that does not look like a recent break. I would expect the crack line to be brighter than I am seeing. I do think the bore scope is a good place to start, but if the scoping is inconclusive, then removal and separation of the motor trans is smart. The missing piece is big enough to create havoc, especially if it gets jammed between the FW and the case..

Good luck
