Is it really that much to get something like these custom made covers fitted?

I was in sticker shock. Also asked to replace a headliner in another car. 3 years ago one shop said $400. Today this shop quoted me $1800. But as I said, they are a pretty reputable shop in the area

The quote you got is off the planet.
I got my replacement leather covers from these folks:
https://www.classic9leathershop.com
Also since your seats are black they may be able to be cleaned up.
If you are handy you can buy the replacement covers and install them yourself.
There are lots of vids on YOUTUBE on installing covers/
I did my hard-back seats which are a little more complex than the soft-back seats but with a little patience, it went well.
Take a look at this page:

Also consider having a professional recondition your existing seats, adding a little emollient and prepping the leather can make them look good.

@Aardvark123 I folllowed the link and when all was added with installation it came out to just under $2800 so maybe the shop I went to was pretty accurate. I may be better off waiting for a good used set but want to do sooner than later

Two separate listings currently on SF Bay Area Craigslist, both have been for sale for a while, both need parts but covers look decent. Might be useable for the covers at the right price.

The reputable shop in my area did recommend they fit a new cover that they will order for $2800 installed OR to repair the outer bolster panel and outer bolster cushion for $2000.

They said it will match pretty well, a lot better than what I have. I been looking for seats off and on for a while with no luck and originally thought to be the bolsters done would be $600-700 max. When they quoted, I thought I’m better off getting a pair or good used seats. I’ll try the Craigslist ad again. I did email last week but never got a response.

I asked the shop for their recommendations. His response was, how much you want to spend, but said the more they repair the panels the more it makes sense to just buy the cover and redo.
the drivers seat is in pretty bad shape IMO, but he said it can be repaired if I don’t want to spend for full cover

My drivers' seat had the same wear. I tried the leather patch kits, but i couldn't ever get the color (chestnut brown) to match. Got my seat covers from Rod at classic9leathers, and had a local auto upholsterer put them on. All in it was $2,500 total for both drivers and passengers seats. Reach out to Rod.

One of the weak points on many 993's is the front seat leather. $2,500 to make that go away is a no brainer to me!

Don't take this personally but those covers are shot. There are some great post replies above with good advice. When it comes to upholstery , every one wants to fix up or make better than what they have but not to the cost of doing it right. When all is said and done , you are really looking for perfect unless you are just fixing up a beater car to drive in the winter. I have seen work that improved seats by replacing a panel and done well but the owner always is somewhat disappointed in that it is not perfect. The advice from a good trimmer (the proper term for an automotive upholstery guy) will be that it costs real money to fix it right and they may be able to do some repair with your budget but it will never be perfect. Replacing a leather panel (driver left bolster) can be done and the foundation rebuilt but the texture /feel of the leather will never be the same unless old leather is used. There is no shortcut to this and any trim shop that quotes a low price should be avoided at all costs-(pun intended)
Looking for used seats for a 25+year old car will result in not meeting your expectations and will cost more than $1500 if you can find them.
The best bet for all of us that are picky and car enthusiast's with seats in your condition is bite the bullet and get new covers from classic9 or from World upholstery down the road from me. Both specialize in Porsche trim items and both do top notch work. This is the big part of the cost but there is no real way around it unless you buy the hides ,have a walking foot machine and know the tricks. You can buy the covers and do it yourself thanks to the info link above , but you must rebuild the foam foundation or it will never look right. A good trim shop will rebuild the foundation, repair defects in the frame and install the covers for $400 to $ 700. The shop rate at trim shops is not high, it just takes time to do it right. (and it is hard work!)
Unless you get real lucky, those seats that are out there should be considered as cores. They will be better than yours but spending 80% of doing it right will result in maximum of 60% satisfaction.
If you are going from manual seats to full electric or something fancier, then used seats is the answer. I am actually looking for a pair of seats myself as I have a roll of the original wool papita and want to do a set of seats but also keep my 95% perfect black seat. Therefore I am looking for seats as cores and will have World make a set of covers using my material.
No easy answer, but don't get caught up in a low price, you will regret it when they ruin what you already have.
Good hunting!
